 safe to travel around trinidad?

i'm getting a bit worried, when i read the postings about the safety on trinidad.

thinking of staying at the hilton and renting a car to explore the island during the day and maybe get to some places at night to have dinner.

not wise to do?!

thanks for your help - i'm really interested in going to t & t. starting out in trinidad and take the ferry over to tobago, maybe also renting a car there.

I wouldn't advise driving yourself around. Much better to hire someone who knows where NOT to go. Worse yet if you are a single female. And that's not because they drive on the other side of the road.

Read past messages here for the contact info for someone who can drive you. Believe me, it will be well worth it.

The Hilton has many reliable taxi and tour companies that it can recommend to safely take you around the island. While it is not that unsafe, if you were to consider driving around the island, it would be better to do so during the day. There a lot of nice restaurants around POS where you can have dinner at night. The hotel can easily recommend some.

I would strongly encourage you to limit your exploring to more traveled venues. If not in a group do not rent a car. Take a respected and well recommended taxi or tour guide (don't just use one you meet on the street). Trinidad is a beautiful place but it is not safe to just wander around not knowing where you are going at all. Going out at night ck with the Hilton about referral to good and safe restaurants etc. I agree, read past posts and make a wise decision.

If you're staying at the Hilton and you want to check out the place during the day that's fine. Just don't venture into that hilly area near Hilton which is called Cascade. But during the day is generally fine if you wanna drive (wear your seatbelt!). During the night, you know, I wouldn't recommend you do much if any exploring, unless you get a driver to take you to a restaurant nearby. Be careful when driving in Trinidad, you know sometimes you should be more worried about how they drive than the crime.

Hi RosiS,

I mirror the sentiments of the other posters. As a first-timer to Trinidad I would not recommend driving alone. Very agressive drivers, poor road conditions, lack of adequate signage, crime. Also too sadly many of the tourist sites are not set up for tourists, no guide books, no signs, no guides etc. If you can find them, you basically go in and wonder around on your own.

A tour or taxi would be much safer and many drivers will provide at least some information on where you are going or what you are seeing.

There are many dining options on Ariapita Ave, pubs, wine bars, restaurants, street food, bars. featuring local and other foods such as Italian, sushi, korean, chinese. for clubbing recommend 51 degrees, Zen.

Trinidad is a great place to visit with very interesting food , culture and people.

if you are here I definitley encourage you to go over to Tobago for some beach fun for a couple of days. The beaches there are much more acessible and varied than Trinidad and the pace is at a much slower "Island life" speed. If you are into marine sports, Tobago has some great diving and snorkelling.

Hope this helps.
