Need advice for Dreamliner on Jetstar domestic flight

I’ve an upcoming domestic flight (JQ27) from MEL to SYD on a 787, but it seems the flight’s actually an international one from MEL to HKT, so I’m just “tagging along” and hopping off at its scheduled (90min) stop in SYD.

I’ll only have a small 20in carryon, and I need a little advice from the more frequent flyers on the Forum. What would be a good seat to request on the 787 considering:

1. I want to make sure there will be space for my carryon in the overhead compartment (perhaps a seat at the rear so I can board first?)

2. More importantly, I’d like to place my carryon to make it as easily accessible as possible (not buried behind someone else’s stuff) to be the least disruptive to other pax when I get off at SYD.

I don’t want to be forced to gate check such a small bag. I’d just like to board, then get out of everybody else’s way when the flight arrives at SYD.

If your carry on is more than 7kg they may weigh it and they may make you check it.

Oh, it's going to be around a little over 6kg.

Unless it's Winter where I'm going, or I'm travelling on business where I'll need to pack a few decent suits, I just travel light.

I don't really think you'll have an issue with the overheads ... that seems to be a US thing. Jetstar are quite strict with carry-on restrictions so I would be completely surprised if you couldn't find a space.

I was quite shocked traveling in the US to have to constantly check-in our carry-ons because people just had so much stuff with them, it really won't happen here.

Yes I agree I've never had a problem in Aus. US a completely different story. But I have had carry on weighed here a number of times and I think Jetstar in particular has become even more fussy. We are flying with them next week and yesterday I got an email reminding me about carryon size and weight.

I think you realise, but you do understand that this flight leaves from the International terminal (even though you are just flying MEL - SYD) and that rules for International flights apply.

I hate to admit it, but some folks here do come close to packing the kitchen sink with them ;)

BTW, I’ve never done a flight like this before. I once had a Northwest (now DL) flight from JFK to NRT via IAD and the pax beside me got off at IAD, but that was ages ago, so I’m not sure how this works. Would I have to go through the immigration line at MEL after checking in? That would be odd, since I wouldn’t be flying home from `Oz yet

Uhm, rules for international flights?

I'm always at the airport 3 hrs before any flight, do OLCI, and any LAG's go into the quart size ziplock. Recently though, I had a bottle of moisturizer confiscated in Japan (despite a doctor's note for it)

Oh, got the link and reading it now.

If something goes wrong, In a worse case scenario I guess I could just catch a bus or train from Southern Cross to Sydney (though that would mean a very uncomfortable night- ugh!)

I'm not sure about the liquid thing ... on domestic flights you can carry any amount of liquids, there aren't any restrictions. As this is an international flight I'm not sure, we have done this but never with liquids.
