Description: Naomi Pomeroy, who was deservedly nominated for a James Beard award this year, runs a restaurant that’s both intimate and communal. You sit at long tables and the guests tend to be knowledgeable food mavens, so there's inevitably good conversation. Since everyone is eating the same food, the meal itself is the verbal centerpiece. The set dinner menu changes weekly and is as responsive to the seasons as a robin and it's usually a 2 1/2-hour affair, beautifully paced with superb service. Pomeroy's cooking is inspired by French grandmothers, with touches rustic and elegant. The six courses are well-thought-out, individually and collectively, but all of it done in down-home Portland style: no fuss, no white napery. At the end of the meal you have had the perfect amount of food, in exquisite balance. The wine list is small and carefully thought out...a pairing of a small pour for each course is available, and highly recommended! . -Roger Porter for the Oregonian

We must have been at the same brunch as Marsh1058. The food was acceptable but not exceptional, and plated nicely. However, the staff was officious to the point of being rude. We were a party of three and arrived a little early for the second seating (noon). They didn't want us to sit down so we took a short walk.... More

We've traveled the World and have had opportunity to dine in some extraordinary places and eat some incredible meals. Yet this Portland treasure called Beast was able to surprise our palates, tantalize our taste buds and amply satisfy the gourmand in us. I took extreme pleasure and delight in e.v.e.r.y morsel served. The delectability surpassed any meal I've EVER eaten,... More

Charmless and loud, Beast's atmosphere might (only might) be overcome by good food. Alas, all you brunch reviewers who liked Beast were wrong; there is not good food here. Our brunch began with "Champagne-poached rhubarb clafoutis" the chief characteristic of which was its cloying sweetness. It also had raw crust on the bottom. The "Beast Hash" was virtually inedible, a... More

Had a great brunch, 4 courses on Easter Sunday. First course: clafoutis with rhubarb. Second: pork belly hash with a poached egg Third: cheese course with salad and a poached plum. Fourth, dark chocolate stout cake. Everything was fabulous. The service was perfect. Can't wait to go to dinner.

The concept of Beast, and of Chef Natalie Pomeroy is one that you have to be ready for going in: two big communal tables and prix fix menu without an option for substitutions. Personally, I love that, and was intrigued to leave the evening up to the chef's choice. Because the menu changes, it doesn't make much sense for me... More

Let's start with the cancellation policy. Parties of 5 and under who cancel within 24 hours are charged the full cost of dinner at $75/person. For larger parties, make that 48 hours. Now, pupils, for the test: how many ingredients are in the charcuterie course? 50? You're right! Each of the 6 courses is painstakingly assembled by two of the... More

Wanted to try Beast for quite some time, the food was wonderful service as well. I hoped for some porky or meaty goodness and being winter a few more warm/hot dishes but in general it was a great meal.

This lovely little gem of a restaurant appealed to all of my senses. Clean & classy in appearance. Elegant without being pretentious & lots of personal touch. Every direction I looked in had some small great detail that all worked perfectly together to repesent the staff and the food. Its hard to bring words to keyboard that could give justice... More

A really unique experience with great food, wine, desserts, pricing is fair and all around great service. No changes recommended at all this way. ONE big issue is sound. Chef likes it very loud and with vocal music.....I think this is not in concert with setting, cuisine, or style of restaurant much less the price point. Suggest the chef wear... More
