It is unfortunate that there is a minimum of postive competition between restaurants of ethnic variety out here in "upstate" New York, and it reflects in the quality of food and service. The "mom without pop" shtick does not fool a professional chef from NYC such as myself. I usually give a place the benefit of the doubt by dining... More

Very good sushi and Japanese food. Sushi, tempura, spring rolls, etc. Open for lunch only - weekdays.

I have eaten lunch there every since Mrs Takamesa opened and the food is consistently delicious! Having eaten in Japan for several years this is a real treat to have authentic food in my small hometown!! Her chicken, soba, tempura etc are all delicious and the lunch portion is so large I usually have leftovers to take home. The stairs... More

I just experienced Bento Ya Masako for the first time! What a lovely little place. I ordered the Udon soup noodles which came with a side of tempura. The place is small, warm and full of love. The portions were large. I only wish I knew about this place sooner. Thank you so much Bento Ya Masako! I cannot wait... More

Thank you, Trip Advisor reviewers, I never would have found this gem without you! This restaurant was just as reviewers said, a hole in the wall place with wonderfully fresh food and friendly service. You feel like you have wandered into someone's kitchen, and she is making dinner for you. As first- timers, we ordered too much food. The woman... More

In a hard-to-see (and not advertised place) you will find Bento Ya Masako. Walking up the creaky stairs, you might think to yourself that you must not be in the right place. About half way up the stairs you start smelling a wonderful aroma. You open the door at the top and see an open area with some tables and... More

In the heart of Downtown is a secret garden of earthly delights. Locate one of NY's oldest Jewelery stores, find the blue door and stumble up an old, narrow flight of stairs to "Bento Ya Masako." There you are in for a surprisingly gratifying culinary experience. Owned and operated by Masako Takemasa, she prepares some of , if not the... More

Halfway down Market Street, you'll find an aging blue door next to a old triboard with deflated balloons. Don't let this disguise fool you; after you pass the rackety staircase, you'll find a room with chipped paint and a visible kitchen. But this is truely a diamond in the rough. Whether you're looking for lo mein, spicy wasabi, crispy tempura,... More

There is a restaurant above a jewelers called Bongs. You go through a small blue door and up a flight of stairs to one of the strangest restaurants I have eaten in, in the US. Masako is the name of the owner and the idiosyncrasies extend beyond the location. For example the restaurant is only open 11am to 3pm Tuesday... More
