Was recommended by the Inn at St. John. Seating was a little cramped, but did not have to wait. Location is on the water, and the view of boats is nice. Food was good; our group all ordered lobster dinners with steamers & they all thought it was great. I had the clam chowder which was excellent. Service was good.... More

Okay, once a local place gets instant cache by virtue of a Bon Appetit mention, the tourists swarm. We discovered J's Oyster Bar 7 years ago, in that short time, the place has gone from a true local gem (horseshoe bar with people tippling heavily at noon) PLUS a mound of local oysters mounded on ice, to shuck when ordered.... I grew up in New England and know a good lobster roll. Each time I find myself in Maine, I have to get my lobster roll "fix." I had 5 rolls in the 2 days I was there. The rolls are overflowing with fresh, juicy Maine lobster. I like that it is just lobster meat in a toasted bun, and... More

In the past 4 years we have been to Portland 3 times and always eaten in J's. The most important thing to say is consistency. The first visit 4 years ago was perfect, 2 years ago was also perfect, and last night was again perfect. To say I am a creature of habit, is I'm afraid true. Everytime I have... More

This place can get busy especially after Anthony Bourdains visit but make sure you at least come once to try a large bucket of steamers. To me its the best thing on the menu. If its your first time having steamers ask your waitress who Im sure will be more than happy to help instruct you on the process. It... More

If you find yourself in the Portland area and appreciate local seafood then you need to try this place. Don't let the appearance of the building sway your opinion. If anything it will make you feel more at home because it has so much ambiance. If you want linen table clothes and servers in black tie go elswhere. If you... More

Friendly service in a small towny restaurant. We shared the haddock sandwich and lobster rolls. Both were very fresh and yummy! Nice bloody mary's too! Wish it was warmer so we could have eaten outside!

Its nice to go to a restaurant in a new city and feel like you've been living there for years. Great service, great food, great place, definitely if you have a chance!

Order the clams and oysters. Clearly a place where the locals go and are known. Sits right by the water and a huge square bar sits in the center of the restaurant. Seafood and cold beer with no frills and fuss.

The raw scallop cocktail at J's is like no other. Scallops are fresh, tender - slide down your throat "like butter".
