Hunan cuisine has a reputation far and wide as one of the spiciest in China. Di Shui Dong has a reputation as one of the best Hunan restaurants in Shanghai, but it clearly has moderated its spice level in recognition of the local palate's limited tolerance of heat. None of the dishes we ordered was as spicy as I'd have... More

the food was fantastic, the decor was a little confusing , but fun... On our list of places to return to on our next visit.

Huge card. The service is kind observant and fast. The food is great and it is possible to find something for I guess every taste. Maybe not stylish, but a very nice atmosphere. Not a place to celebrate the 10 year wedding day but a place to bring friends for a nice dinner

I had a late night meal here with some friends. It's great open dining room. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. The spare ribs and mapo tofu was great. The fish head was a bit disappointing. The service was so-so, but it worked.

We went to this place after bar hopping on Hengshan Road. We liked the food a lot and one of the reasons was that we were yearning for some spicy food after days of relatively bland diet (we are from India). We were not disappointed. The ribs were excellent and so were the other items of food. The ambiance was... More

This was our second visit to Di Shui Dong, the first occurring on a trip to Shanghai last year. We learned our lesson then - if you are not accustomed to spicy food, go easy on the spice. This time around we asked our waiter to keep things mild and really enjoyed the ribs with hunan spices, as well as... More

Took a couple of local hunan folks here to see the reaction. The feedback was this is as authentic as it gets and just as good as the food in hunan. They also tried other hunan food shops in shanghai and they felt it wasn't authentic as it was localised to shanghai tastebuds. service is what you expect from a... More

Food quality and taste has been going south ever since they became very popular many years ago. I'd still recommend the Maoming Lu branch especially to non Chinese speaking foreigners who want to try spicy Hunan food. Usually busy during dinner so best to book in advance. Ribs are a main staple and though a lot of reviewers complain about... More

Hunanese food can be great, but the speciality (the ribs) were just OK. The service was not pleasant and the staff seemed almost annoyed to have us there. The real kick came when we settled the bill. The tea that was freely given was not free. In China, tea is usually a courtesy at a restaurant, here they charge for... More

The portions are fairly big so its hard trying different things without having to take it to go or wasting it. The ribs were good but the yutou was spicy as hell; I needed to take breaks between bites.
