popped in for Sunday lunch based on some good reviews - I can't see why the food was deemed to be better than average. The beef was OK but no great flavour and the roast potatoes were fairly flavourless. I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to revisit although the service was good

Popped in to the royal oak for a drink, stayed all day and had an excellent dinner! The staff are ver friendly and extremely knowledgable about the food and the beer. A great choice of well kept real ales. Locally sourced food. As we were going off on a ghost walk they reserved the last venison steaks for us. And... More

Found this place whilst wandering around York, so popped in for a quick afternoon drink. The staff were so welcoming and helpful. We liked it so much we came back for some dinner later that evening! The food was fantastic! The chef knew exactly what he was doing in his kitchen! Absolutely superb! Highly recommend a visit!

I found this to be good value for money . The guide Joanna was interesting to listen to and we discovered things about York that was both historical and informative. the meal after the walk was lovely. This is worth doing if visiting York. Would highly recommend.

I was part of a large group eating here, with our choices of food all booked in advance. I chose the three course meal for £19.95 - great home made soup followed by venison then their version of Eton mess. It was all delicious and good value. The venison seems to be a speciality and it was lovely - very... More

This is a lovely real ale pub in Goodramgate with live music on a Wednesday night in the cramped but atmospheric bar. Very good atmosphere and friendly.

Overview - This is the second time have eaten at this establishment and whilst the food is still good value for money, in my mind lacked the final polish it has the potential to meet that would differentiate between good and mouth watering. When the staff were not rushed off their feet where friendly and happy to exchange items that... More

Made very welcome by the friendly barman/landlord who took time to chat to us. Had the Set Menu lunch that was well presented, very tasty and good value.

I took a group of international colleagues (9 in total) to the Royal Oak for the Discover & Dine Experience. We were taken on an extremely informative and entertaining walking tour around the city by Joanne, whose knowledge ensured that all members of the tour were kept engaged and that tone was light hearted and interactive. All the party went... More

We recently visited the royal oak for a few drinks and a bite to eat. We loved the traditional look of the pub especially all the old books in the conservatory. The bar man was welcoming and friendly. My husband is a real ale drinker and was impressed with the selection. Drinks were nice if a little steep. But then... More
