Travellers' Choice
Striking the perfect balance of seclusion without solitude, Monastero Santa Rosa allows guests to determine the tone of their stay, whether they're looking to disappear for an intimate getaway or gather with the group and make new acquaintances. It's hard to imagine that the generous grounds, filled with four levels of gardens, lush landscaping, plentiful lounge chairs, and canopied daybeds, serve just 20 rooms and suites. Where most boutique properties might only offer in-room massages, Monastero Santa Rosa hosts a fully equipped spa to rival any major city spa, offering not just treatment rooms, but large-scale amenities that include a sauna, steam, mosaic-tiled experience shower, hydro pool, and tepidarium. Guests are welcome to feel a part of the scene at the library and bar. Engage in a game of chess or cards or read while sipping a martini in the modern cocktail area. Relax down by the pool or discover the resort's secret gardens, quiet sun decks, and indoor relaxation areas. Get the best of both worlds by making your stay as energizing or relaxed as you wish, by selecting different spaces to suit your mood at any time.

All the praise people have heaped on Monastero Santa Rosa is deserved. It’s truly an amazing place. A refuge from the bustle of nearby towns and just steps from traffic on a main artery yet in a hushed world of its own. Rather than repeat many of the same phrases and thoughts found in other reviews, 2 words come to mind: Gracious and Intuitive. During our brief 3 night stay between a week in Cinque Terre and a week on Sicily, my wife and I felt saved as an injured person might upon entering a hospital. Serenity abounds. In a most understated manner, the staff - Reception, Housekeeping, Restaurant and Pool - could not be more helpful and, yes…more gracious. Needs and wishes were anticipated. It all reflects well on the training and selection of personnel. The only minor skirmish occurred at the end of our scheduled spa treatments, but that was quickly resolved. The spa, as almost everyone mentions, is a sight to behold and experience. Our only regret? The need to fulfill obligations in Sicily after just 3 nights.

All I can say is that I am so happy I was able to spend my days at a far better hotel than here. I came with my service animal and all necessary paperwork required and was treated well at every other 5 star hotel around Italy and Croatia. This hotel denied us and we were forced to find accommodations last minute while already in Europe. Thankfully we found last minute 5 star accommodations but we had to pay double the price since it was very last minute. Those same hotels do not allow pets but allow service animals and we were treated with respect and had a perfect time. After having to spent double the money, they decided to keep 1000 EUR since we had to cancel “last minute”. They have denied us a full refund multiple times. We did not cancel last minute but were not allowed to be there due to our service animal. Their first excuse was that the dog will give guests allergies, I’m assuming their mysterious guests cannot go into the streets either and be surrounded by dust or pollen. For being “luxurious” place, why are they so stingy with their money? Go to Il San Pietro.

Response from Pompeo Amendola, Servizi per gli ospiti/front office at Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa
Responded 8 Oct 2023
My name is Ferdinando Alfano, I am the Manager of Monastero Santa Rosa. I did read your comment with attention and would like to thank you for the time you did dedicate us to express your opinion. Regarding to your dissatisfaction, I am obviously very sorry, but I believe it is appropriate to summarize your reservation exactly. On June 29th we received your booking confirmation from a Travel Agency, which is completely aware of our choice to not allow animals and to only accept guests from 16 years old. (It is reported on our Website, on OTA websites and we have informed all Travel Agency's with which we cooperate) On July 29th, we have received your email, with the information that you would be bringing your service dog with you, about which we had not been informed before. On the same day, we replied to your email, and did communicate our policy again, and did the same with your Travel Agency by answering to their e-mail. As we understood that there had been a miscommunication between you and them, we agreed to not charge the full penalty (even if it was only one week before the arrival date) but only 50% of it. As reported on the booking confirmation, we charge 50% of the total room charge for cancellations received with less than 30 days’ notice. I would also like to clarify that we have never written (but perhaps this is due to our level of English) that dogs could cause allergies to our Guests, but due to our pet’s policy, it could be that someone, that has an allergy, has booked our Hotel also for this reason. I am very sorry that we did not have the opportunity to welcome you in our hotel, but it would not have been correct to do an exception, also to respect those who did not have the opportunity to bring their dog. Should you return to the Amalfi Coast, I would be very pleased to welcome you at Monastero Santa Rosa, to meet you in person for a Tour of the property and if you wish to invite you for Lunch or Dinner. Kind regards, Ferdinando Alfano General Manager

A wonderful, healing, luxurious break. I haven’t been for eight years, but the Monastero was as good as ever. Staff are wonderful, witty and helpful. Restaurant was as special as I remember it. And the Spa was to die for. Thank you. I will be back again before too long

It’s almost hard to put into words how well Monastero Santa Rosa takes care of its guests. Would highly recommend a trip to the spa - the massage experience was wonderful but the thermal baths are something I’ll be dreaming of for years to come. That and starting my day with a breakfast that utilizes some of the regions freshest ingredients. The only mistake we made during our visit was leaving the property!

Stayed a week at Monastero Santa Rosa and it was an amazing week. Hotel staff are amazing. Some of the best pool side food I have ever had. The Michelin star restaurant was amazing. Great shuttle to and from Amalfi for dinner. I would highly recommend this hotel!

We loved loved loved our stay at the Monastero Santa Rosa, where the nuns invented sfogliatella. An American bought the old monastery and it took ten years to rebuild it into the most glorious hotel that it is today. We were greeted by the ringing of the bell and lemonade from the old turnstile in reception. Our rooms both had ocean views and lovely well appointed bathrooms. The rooms are on the smaller side but you won’t spend much time in them when you see the beautiful infinity pool and all the spectacular tiered gardens. I am an avid gardener and was so impressed with the all the plants especially the rose going up the wall near the spa entrance. We ate in the Refettorio restaurant on our first night - highly recommend the cacio e Pepe with truffles and lamb entree. Food and service was excellent. We had lunch at the pool a couple of days. The concierge here was so helpful when we were arranging our trip back in the US. They arranged a private boat with a captain for the day and we cruised from Amalfi to Positano. We got out and walked around - glad we didn’t stay here as the crowds have gotten so much worse since our last trip. We cruised onto Nerano ( with a lunch stop at Maria Grazie for spaghetti with zucchini). Then we came back and passed Amalfi and hopped out in the town of Minori and went to Sal de Riso right at the harbor for the much talked about Lemon Delizia - and it was outstanding! The hotel has an outdoor covered gym with great views. We enjoyed an outdoor game room at night for some family Blackjack and of course the bocci court during the day. The hotel has a shuttle service to and from Amalfi that you arrange which is great because it’s hard to find parking in the town. Each night the hotel leaves a little gift for you in the room - lovey special touch. I can’t recommend this hotel enough - we did not want to leave. Everything is done so well and the service exceptional. Congrats to Bianca Sharma on a job well done in restoring this amazing monastery. Perfect!

The chicest experience you can have in Amalfi. The location is stunning, on a cliff, the outside pool is a dream. Unbelievable service during dinner, exquisite food and wine (we ordered pasta), digestive was on the house. We will never forget this out of time Italian dinner!

Outstanding staff and beautiful surroundings. We were warmly greeted with a ringing of the bell and a welcome fresh lemon drink. Very tastefully remodelled monastery with a fabulous backstory and tasteful decor - including a confessional. Picturesque views of the sea and a lovely infinity style pool. Looking forward to our next visit.

Where do I start? We have been to some amazing hotels around the world from Qualia in Australia to the Bel Air in LA. But Monastero Santa Rosa is probably the finest luxury hotel we have ever stayed at. This is not just a hotel, it's a complete emotional and personal experience. Draped over massive cliffs on the Amalfi coast, the property is incredible, with gorgeous plants and flowers dripping over railings and framing intoxicating views of the sea below. This is a private and intimate hotel - not overrun with mobs. There are so many quiet nooks to hide away in and gaze. The highlight is the infinity pool that is on the cliff edge - stunning. Finally, what really makes this place so memorable are the staff and people. Each person we interacted with, really made us feel welcome. From the welcome bell, to the champagne rose in our Rosa suite to the incredible breakfasts and food, Monastero Santa Rosa is a first class experience that I need more of.
