Having seen this hotel on " 4 in a bed" we thought it would be ideal for one night. We had stayed 2 nights in The Imperial Hotel" in Llandudno, 1 night in the Premier Inn in Caernarvon and traveled on the Welsh Highland Railway to Porthmadog finishing our journey the following day on the train to Birmingham. Reception was... More

Obviously we are disappointed that this customer's expectations were not met but quite frankly, when a customer has champagne tastes and wants to pay beer bottle money, I am not surprised. This customer booked through a third party on line site with the cheapest room excluding breakfast and, in our letter of confirmation, it cleatly states that there would be... More

This is a wonderful hotel. The staff are very friendly and informative and go out of their way to please there customers. If you are visiting porthmadogs three steam railways the Ffestiniog Railway, Welsh Highland Railway and the Welsh Highland Heritage railway then this is the place for you to stay. The food is fantastic. Look forward to staying again... More

Very nice old hotel (so no lift). The room was large, warm and spotless. The bathroom was pristine and warm. The staff were extremely helpful and the food was good - particularly the home-made marmalade at breakfast! I would have welcomed a fish dish or two on the Classics menu, but as the food is made to order, the chef cooked... More

If you take the Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon to Porthmadog and return, the timetable allows approximately only 1hr 45minutes at Porthmadog which means there is no a lot of time for lunch. This is a pity since there is much to see. However, good lunch venues in Porthmadog are few. We booked a table at the Royal Sportsman and... More

I have stayed in this hotel 3 or 4 times now. I found the courtyard room a little too cold for my liking, so I prefer the rooms in the main hotel building. For the single room, I think the price you pay is much higher than you ought to for the standard of the room. My single was basic... More

A great place to stay if you are visiting the area. You can walk from the hotel to the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways. You can also easily access the Welsh Coastal Path and walk to the fantastic beaches at Borth a Gest and Black Rock Sands. Nearby is the lovely village of Portmeirion, (half price entry after 15:30). You... More

Called in on spec last Wednesday lunchtime. Saw that we could take our dog in. We had a lovely snack, cooked well and presented nicely; even a bowl of water for the pooch. The staff were very friendly without being intrusive. Loved the quaint spelling on the Cocktial [sic] list! A pleasant hour spent in great surroundings. Thank you.

Very friendly, enthusiastic staff - Ian, from the front desk, walked us to our room to make sure we understood how to work everything, and was incredibly helpful and friendly throughout our stay. The room was fairly straightforward although there was a large group gathering above our room which was a little noisy during the late evening. The restaurant is... More

I turned up at The Royal Sportsman not having booked a room - stupid boy! How lucky was I that they had one of my favourite rooms vacant - no 3 a garden room. The hotel is warm, welcoming and the staff are all very pleasant and genuinely ensure that guests are looked after. Well worth a visit.
