Selva Negra is a pioneer in sustainable, organic, ecotourism. High in the cool mountains outside Montegalpa, this pristine farm boasts over 1500 acres of fertile mountain countryside nestled against one of the last remaining cloud forests on the planet. My wife and I spent three nights in a lovely cabana surrounded by a forest that was overwhelmingly untouched by man.... More

This was my second trip to Selva Negra. When we visited last time way back when, possibly March 2012, it was raining cats & dogs and we had a hard time getting even from our cabin to the dining area. It was also very cool. However, through the pouring rain & mist I had noticed that it was a beautiful... More

The place is really beautiful. You hear the howlers monkeys during day and in the morning. The standard rooms have a direct view over the pond and the hill with the rainforest. Walking in the several paths in the forest is great, and we did sleep well as it was much cooler than next to the sea. Food is nothing... More

A la puchica! This wonderful setting high above the mountain is a must visit. The air here is fresh, cold and refreshing. It's also less travelled and not as touristic compared to the arid San Juan del sur and Granada full of tourist. Selva negra is a self sustainable ecotourist lodge which grows everything from herbs, vegetables, poultry, and beef... More

We spent our first 2 days in Nicaragua here and absolutely loved the peace and wonder it provided us. Lucky enough to get a coffee tour with the owner Mausi we got to see the whole of this nearly off the grid self sustaining community and we were not disappointed. We had a small rustic cabin to ourselves and spent... More

Good location, nice environment, so no complaints there. Took the coffee tour, 2.5hrs including a mini tasting at the end, USD15. Was ok. "Hotel style"rooms (USD45 plus tax) by the lake are very outdated and basic. Reminded me of school trips. Fan didn't work in the 1st room, we had to change rooms. They say some of the rooms have... We had the pleasure of bringing a group of about 30 folks to Selva Negra while working in Matagalpa for 7 days, running a medical clinic at a church in the Las Marias barrio and training pastors. Having been multiple places around the country, I have to say that Matagalpa is now my favorite! The natural beauty, cool mountain air,... More

Thank you for your trip to Selva Negra. It is truly our pleasure to host groups such as yours that are doing so much good for people in our surrounding community. We try hard to hire only people from the community and to train them in the skills that we need. All of these things make the Matagalpa area better... More

We went there for a daytrip and hiked in the lovely forest, then we saw that you can get a double room for just 25$ in total so we stayed for a night. Room was basic but just fine, comfy beds. Food is more expensive but it was worth being there in the evening (we also did a 1hr night... More

Very glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Selva Negra. One minor thing that I did want to correct for others reading this review is that our most inexpensive rooms at $15 per person per night. We have 6 rooms of this type of lodging that have two double beds. So one of these rooms can be rented... More

We spent two days at Selvar Negra. What a welcome change from the unrelenting heat of Granada! The resort is located high above Matagalpa and is an oasis of greenery and coolness. We went hiking up to the Mosquito Trail (which has no mosquitoes; nor for that matter does the resort) accompanied by the sounds of exotic birds and howler... More

Thanks for staying at Selva Negra on your recent trip to Nicaragua. I am very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay here and got to experience much of what we have to offer. The Mosquitia trail is actually named after the Mosquitia Indians that inhabited this area of Nicaragua. The ridge of our mountain was part of the... More

We took a road trip through the coffee highlands of Nicaragua -- and stopped for lunch at Selva Negra. German organic food (a bit expensive), and a lovely walk around the grounds. Chapel quite picturesque - would make a great wedding place.
