Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This hotel was both clean and the service was very good. The vibe was definitely different and you could tell that as soon as you walk into the reception area. The staff was also friendly & courteous. Wonderful stay!

We picked this for the Old World charm and it's proximity to Grace Cathedral where we were attending a performance. It wasn't charming- just tired and the room looked nothing like the ones on the website. The room was clean, but maintenance wasn't up to par. There was no hair dryer and the plug in the bathroom was damaged, as was the cord on a lamp. On the confirmation it says that overnight parking is $35.00. We parked in the garage we were told to go to and when we went to get the car in the morning they said it was $40.00. I called the Cornell and they said they no longer had an agreement with the garage (that they told me to go to the day before) and the person at the front desk said there wasn't anything she could do. I said that I guessed all I could do then is write a Tripadvisor review!

Wonderful hotel with a European flavor. Convenient to Union Square. The rooms are cozy and the restaurant is among the best in the city. Although on a steep hill, it's walkable to China Town, the embarcadero and even the giants ball park.

My stay at Cornell Hotel de France was fantastic! Located in the city center, the hotel and rooms may not be large, but the atmosphere in the check-in area, breakfast restaurant, and afternoon tea lounge was classy and chic. I took many photos. The corridors and rooms were as vibrant and French-inspired as shown in the pictures. The highlight was definitely the elevator, but I won't spoil it; you have to experience it yourself. I absolutely loved it!

Authentic Hotel. Appreciated Manager #Manny. He is such a talk able guy. Engaging with Guest. We loved near by site views. China town, Union Square. Beyond its luxurious accommodations and culinary delights, the hotel's prime location makes it an ideal base for exploring San Francisco's renowned attractions. Within walking distance, guests can explore Union Square's upscale shops, dine at world-class restaurants, or catch a cable car to iconic landmarks such as Fisherman's Wharf and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Do not believe the old reviews. Hotel was family owned but was sold several months ago. Now run down, sketchy staff, towers straight out of junior high school gym showers, NO HEAT IN THE ROOM S and the front desk staff have blue suggestion was take a hot shower, the breakfast just over cooked scrambled eggs….the list goes on and on

We are sorry that we did not meet your expectations. We have carried on the same traditions that made our French style boutique hotel unique in this busy San Francisco city. Handpainted artwork still adorns the hallways and guestroom doors. Art and beauty surround our guests who appreciate old world charm. Complimentary hot breakfast buffet is served daily in our newly reopened onsite restaurant.

Though not for everyone I have stayed at the Cornell for the past 34 years with my husband, with my sister, with my daughter, with a friend visiting from Oz and a birthday weekend with two friends. The place is eye candy. The breakfast was fresh, hot and ample. The elevator is a interesting and right out of another century. The location is in the center of it all yet on a quiet side street. The staff are kind and respectful and there is parking just across the street.
