We found the service, staff very good. The rooms are in need of major refurbishment. No bedside lights, flyscreen torn and nearly fell off when we tried to open the window and the bathroom was horrible! Because we are Accor members we had thisat a special price I did not complain on the spot. It was very disappointing accommodation. The... More

American River is a bit off the main drags across Kangaroo Island, but worth the diversion from the main road to Kingscote. The hotel has been there for a while and to some extent it shows its age. But it's kept very well - very clean and supported by enthusiastic staff. Rooms are good, especially if you have a view... More

Motel was comfortable, clean & friendly. American River was an excellent base to discover Kangaroo Island. The restaurant at the motel was excellent. there are not many other places to eat at American River. Would definitely stay here again.

Enjoyable 5 night stay, wonderful view of the sunrise over the bay from the room window. I spent 7 weeks on K.I. sat with Kangaroos feeding their Joey's at Cape Borda, and watched Seals playing at Admiralty Arch. It makes a good base to explore the island, get off the bitumen, it really is a wilderness island, it is all... More

This establishment attracts brickbats and bouquests in almost equal proportions. On arrival we were told that there was no booking for us despite the fact we had a confirmation. It transpired that our booking had been incorrectly recorded. As they were full we were given accommodation next door for our first night. Staff were most apologetic and we were given... More

Nothing really wrong with the property. Question the destination!! Kangaroo Island = wild life ?? We have more native birds in suburban Melbourne, Pelicans @ Black rock , Kangaroos @ Cardinia . Not sure if we would return to the island- felt "the Island" was over marketed for what it had to offer.

Clean and reasonably presented, however the room and fixtures were quite dated and the plumbing/water pressure in the shower left a great deal to be desired. Our room overlooked the road, which was not a problem, but was also located near a pump which was noisy from early in the morning.

This is a lovely hotel in the quiet town of American River. We stayed in a Studio room, which had a handy small fridge and microwave. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was more than adequate. Staff were friendly. The restaurant made an excellent dinner; yes, it was pricier than the mainland but that's the case through most... More

Even the Standard room was very pleasant. Older room with some old fixtures but very nice all the same. Great view from the room overlooking the pool area and bay. The location is great for a base to rest of island or just a quiet getaway. Not many facilities in American River but restaurant was excellent for evening meals in... More

Don't expect European style hotel quality here. Installations and furniture are more on par with USA motels and also is the breakfast. But do expect even higher prices than London or Paris. Anyway, the place is ok. We had a room with views to the lake and waking up there was really special. We also have dinner there two nights.... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Kangaroo Island, one of Australia's great wilderness destinations, is best known for its magnificent coastal views, unique landscapes, uncrowded beaches and fascinating wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, Australian sea-lions, New Zealand fur seals and Little penguins. Kangaroo Island is a place of natural beauty and a place to escape. The Kangaroo Island Lodge is situated on the banks of Eastern Cove in American River, with all rooms perfectly perched offering exceptional water views over the bay. Amid lush coastal vegetation, the Kangaroo Island Lodge blends in with its natural surroundings. There is no better place to unwind and to enjoy the peace and tranquility. The seclusion of this area allows for the abundance of wildlife to roam free. Tammar wallabies, brush tailed possums, black swans, Cape Barren geese, Australian pelicans and the rare and endangered glossy black cockatoos can all be found in here. The outer bay of Eastern Cove offers excellent sailing and fishing in protected waters. The Kangaroo Island oyster industry is also located in American River, with the Oyster Shed located just down the road from the Kangaroo Island Lodge. If you are a keen walker, there are two main walking tracks, the Independence Trail and the Fish Cannery walk. Both walks meander through the natural coastal scrub where numerous species of wildlife and birdlife can be seen. So why not come and escape to the Kangaroo Island Lodge? ... more   less
