I went to La Mariposa in early May of 2013. I stayed at the hotel for 2.5 weeks. I spent my mornings volunteering at a local health clinic (I was a medical student at the time), and spent my afternoons taking Spanish classes. I spent my weekends doing touristy stuff and exploring Nicaragua. Spanish School: The teachers at the spanish... More

I went to La Mariposa with my colleague William and twelve students from our high school in New Hope, PA in December 2012. It was an unforgettable experience. Our group was the first one to stay at El Piscacho. Our students became friends with all the people who worked with Paulette because they were so kind, friendly, and helpful. They... More

I would rate La Mariposa 2.5 stars (slightly less than average). Here is why. I was interested in taking a 1 week Spanish course and an acquaintance recommended La Mariposa. I had already been traveling for a few weeks in Nicaragua, and it happened that the timing and location of the school worked out perfectly for my slightly unorganized itinerary.... More

This is a most extraordinary review!! Firstly, we would strenuously deny that we ‘push’ our agenda on anyone. We have, over the years, tried to develop a program of activities that takes in the more obvious tourist attractions which are within an hour or so of us (there are several) and we try and mix this up with activities of... The best hotel I stayed in during my trip, I can't recommend this place enough! I stayed at La Mariposa for a month and a half as a volunteer and a spanish student and had an incredible experience. The food is great, they have weekly activities and trips all over southwestern Nicaragua, and the spanish school is top notch. My... More

This is such a great, and very detailed, description of the Mariposa. It highlights both our best points and makes clear that there are some things which are just not for everybody. Such as we do, we admit, have a lot of dogs and it can be noisy at times. As you say, we are not the Princess Hilton, we... More

I spent 5 weeks here at the beginning of my gap year and absolutely fell in love with the place. La Mariposa is an education not only in the Spanish language, but also in the environment, geography, culture and animals. The grounds are beautiful and I had almost all of my classes outdoors because the weather was extraordinary. Learning spanish... More

We particularly appreciate your comment that we have a heart....that is certainly how we try and run the Mariposa and it is always so encouaging when students feel that! It is also terrific that your Spanish improved so much. hasta la vista! More

My husband and I spent two wonderful weeks learning spanish from a wonderful group of teachers that made me feel comfortable from the very start. They were very supportive and made conversation come naturally without fear of failure. The grammar instruction was also excellent. All staff was very welcoming and very soon I felt at home. Trips to neighboring communities... More

My 9-year-old son and I had an amazing two weeks at the Mariposa School and we cannot recommend it more highly. My Spanish was already good and I wondered if it would be one of those places that really only caters to beginners - not to worry! My teachers honed right in on the advanced grammar I really wanted to... More

My husband and I were looking for a language school to got to prior to a service trip in Nicaragua. He is conversational and I can order a beer. Regardless, we were welcomed to this lovely place and provided with personalized Spanish lessons. The hotel is small and basic but clean and a friendly place to be. The rooms have... More

I just returned from a week at La Mariposa with my 9-year-old son. We couldn't have had a better time. We stayed at the Eco-Hotel, which was very comfortable with private toilets and hot showers. No question that I would return to La Mariposa, albeit briefly, during my second trip to Nicaragua. I still managed an easy hike, a visit to the new study center, a how-to-make rosquillos (rohs-KEE-yohs) "lesson" at a local woman's home, a film and discussion with a park ranger from the Volcan Masaya park, and 3 days of Spanish classes --... Official Description (provided by the hotel):
La Mariposa is a small, friendly non-profit Spanish school and eco-hotel, just outside the small town of La Concepcion, Nicaragua. Only an hour from Nicaragua's major attractions - Granada, the Pacific Coast, the Laguna de Apoyo, Masaya volcano - and 45 minutes from Managua airport, La Mariposa is surrounded by organic coffee, banana trees and flower gardens. Our cool, green climate (we are 500 meters above sea level - makes a real difference to the temperature) is ideal for studying Spanish! Our conservation efforts - though small scale - have vastly increased our bird population, butterflies and even frogs! We offer intensive Spanish classes in our purpose built classrooms or in outdoor classrooms in our delightful grounds, full of tropical plants and rescued animals. Classes are mostly one on one (max 2 or 3 in a class) and we cater for all levels form beginner to advanced, including specially designed classes for children. We have an extensive library with Spanish study materials and a selection of books in English on Nicaraguan history, development issues etc. We organize a full week (that includes weekends) of activities, including cooking and salsa classes, classes on the history of Nicaragua and a weekly update of what is happening in the Nicaraguan news. These are delivered in Spanish to help with progress in Spanish and with English translation if necessary. On 3 afternoons and Saturdays we offer trips out to local places of interest as well as the Masaya volcano by night, the Masaya markets and artesanias, Granada, Leon, the Laguna de Apoyo, the Pacific beach, Managua, Catarina, the Pueblos Blancos and more! The trips are rotated on a monthly schedule. Students can stay in the eco-hotel or our cabin. We use solar power - for heated water in your shower as well as electricity, conserve rainwater, have a number of recycling schemes and have started our own successful organic farm which provides some of the eggs, veggies, coffee consumed at the Mariposa. And much more. We use our income to maximise the employment of local people (currently employing 45 teachers, maintenance and kitchen staff) and undertake a number of projects in the local community. You can opt to volunteer at one of our community or environmental projects, living in a homestay with a local family. Amongst other projects, we are currently offering volunteer placements on our small organic farm, on a community garden scheme, in local schools, with a day care project. You are also welcome to help out the Mariposa workers - whether feeding our rescued animals or cooking up our healthy meals. All of which is a great way to improve that Spanish! We have also recently opened, on another but close by site, a study centre specifically designed to cater for groups of students. We offer an individualized curriculum which can include Spanish classes, activities and classes on the history, culture and environment of Nicaragua. We can also arrange community service work for groups. Accommodation is in two eco built dormitories, each of which has 8 beds (bunk style). The eating/meeting hall is a lovely structure built of straw bales and thatched roofing. Classrooms face a terrace with great views of the Masaya volcano. Meals are always freshly cooked, often using organic veggies from our farm. And of course there are solar heated showers and solar powered electricity. ... more   less
