We recently managed to stay at HelioHouse, one of a growing number of earthships dug into hillsides in the desert just north of Taos, New Mexico. It was a truly "sustainable" home and an exciting "green" experience. What do we mean by that? Insulation was provided by earth-filled used tires, walls built from earth-packed used bottles and cans, electricity from... More

I first heard of Earthships when I read the actor Dennis Weaver was selling his back in 2004. Earthship? A sustainable home built from recycled materials? As an old hippie I was interested to learn more. I saw the video "Garbage Warrior" on PBS a few years ago and was happy to see the architect, Michael Reynolds was still building.... More

We went with a group of friends for a ski trip. It is about a 20 minute drive from the mountain (10 minutes into Toas the town). I strongly urge families, couples, and friends to consider staying at the Earthship. We rented the entire Phenoix, which comfortably holds about 10 people, and had a great time. The experience of living... More

Glad we were able to stay one night in very comfortable digs. Spending a whole day learning about how earthships are built, and the concepts behind the structures was very enlightening. From this point forward, I keep looking at everything else (conventional construction) and wondering why we build things the way we do, and how did we get to this... More

Our trip was amazing, we stayed in The Studio Earthship and it was so beautiful! It had everything we needed and gave more of an understanding on sustainable living and the construction of the Earthships. We stayed 4 nights and got to explore around the community of Taos, only 15 mins away as well as the Rio Grand Gorge. Beautiful... More

Some of the rooms are very dark, you might wish you had a small hand light. get ready for some incredible stargazing. The desk is probably run by interns, some of them could really use some customer service enlightenment and drop the greener than thou attitude, rather than preaching to the choir and putting off those that don't look like... I stayed for one night at The Corner Cottage in May with my parents in May, and my only regret was not staying longer. I have been interested in sustainable housing for years, and first visited this site over 20 years ago when it was not as advanced as it is today. I enjoyed the peace and quiet of cottage... More

For $295/night, I rented the house called the Phoenix. I recommend the visitor's center to everybody, regardless of what interest level you have in environmental issues or architecture. The overnight rental probably isn't for everybody, but we loved it. It has four big beds in three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, living room open to a larger family room and... More

Stayed two nights in the Studio and the property lives up to its description. It was clean, comfortable, quiet and quirky. Particularly loved the opportunity to see the sunrise from my bed and the stars whilst having a bath! The proximity to the Taos Gorge was wonderful and Earthships staff were very helpful in telling us how to find certain walks,... More

My husband and I have stayed in an Earthship several times over the years. The experience has been well worth the trip every time. We have visited The Hut, The Corner Cottage and The Phoeniix. The homes are amazing, so much so that we invited our adult children to stay with us at The Phoenix summer 2011. This is not... More
