Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Do not stay here. They seriously should’ve paid us to stay here. The room we got reeked of vomit and piss! I had a terrible nights sleep. You would be better off sleeping in a tent outside. There was a loud band playing in the bar and they sucked. I was almost afraid if I layed on the bed I would get a syringe stuck in my back.

You get what you pay for. This is a basic room in a lodge that needs to be updated. The carpets all need to be replaced. What used to be a pond display should be removed or repaired. It would be nice to have the area by the fireplace made comfortable and a fire in the fireplace. There is no elevator and the steps are narrow. The attached restaurant offers basic American food. Keep your expectations low and you will be fine.

Sunday buffet is terrible> Burger night is a big joke! Five dollars for 2 12oz.glasses of soda. No refills were offered! Very bad place. Need someone who knows how to run a restaurant and serve good food.

Response from Dan H, Owner at The Otter Lodge
Responded 3 Sept 2016
We are sorry to hear you haven't enjoyed your experiences with us. Our Sunday Buffet is $10 per person, or $8 if you have our loyalty card - a relatively low price point in the grand scheme of things, so our offerings are limited to reflect this price. We consistently offer biscuits and gravy, fried chicken, broiler pot roast, and assortment of pastries from the local bakery, and whatever other features our kitchen staff chooses to come up with. As for our Buy One Get One Free Burger night, it is extremely popular and our burgers are generally very well received - if your order was incorrect or poorly prepared then I certainly apologize for that. Lastly, our soft drinks are always served in a 16 oz pint glass and complimentary refills are always available. If your server did not offer one, I apologize for that as well - that is not within the standards of our service. Burger night crowds are often unpredictable and staffing in this area is particularly challenging, so you may have caught us on a night when we weren't staffed appropriate.

We stayed here on our way from Canada to Southern Minnesota. It is a clean,, comfortable place to stay and a reasonable price. You get what you paid for. The Supper Club had good food and drinks. The staff were very friendly. We would stay here again.

We stayed one night to visit friends in the area, and those the staff were very nice, it was clear they did not have a record of our reservation. They found a room for us, but we were put in a suite right over the bar where a very bad band played until 2 a.m.! We certainly will travel the distance not to say in this hotel again in the future

We stayed here with a coupon because we like to be adventurous. I have been by here a few times before so I knew it wouldn't be anything great, but I was pleasantly surprised by the room as it had been remodeled fairly recently and it was clean which were two things I didn't expect. The beds had duvets so that bumped it up another notch. The beds were surprisingly comfortable and I did get a good night's sleep. I was there on a weeknight though so it was most likely quieter than the weekends would be. The people were pleasant. The restaurant was excellent and was worth the stay as I drank some surprisingly decent cocktails and wine there. They advertise free wifi but we were never able to connect. All in all with low expectations we ended up having a good time.

I am with XSarge and muskrat2 - I don't know where Myrna stayed, but the Otter Supper Club and Lodge is not it. We had a family reunion July 28-29 in Henning. We stayed at the Otter 26 - 30th. We stayed in the room with the center balcony - we came back one night after our family reunion in Henning and there were people on our balcony drinking. They went out the door at the end of a hallway, meant as an emergency exit, propped the door and enjoyed our balcony - leaving all their empties and cig butts behind. The only thing we found good was the water pressure in the shower. Towels were skimpy. We stayed in a room for 4 and got 3 bath towels, 1 hand towel and 3 wash clothes. Had to ask for toilet paper and then they only give you one at a time. The beds were okay and sheets clean. The big sliding glass doors on the front rooms with the balconies had thin grey curtains that let the heat and light of the day into the rooms, making it hot! The window was so dirty you had to open it to get a clear view of the outside. The AC worked all the time to keep up and then at night it got too cold. You had to get up and turn it off. The BANDS may have been really good and talented - but way too loud, when the people in the room farthest from the supper club could feel and hear the music till the plug was pulled at closing time. I don't know how anyone could sit in the club and enjoy music that loud - deafening. They when the band was done they took 2 hours to load up and leave and they were not very quite about it. The lodge lobby was filthy. Every nook and cranny had an old TV stored in it. When the band stopped playing, all the drunks thought it a good place to hang out for a couple hours. The first night we thought it was guests of the lodge and then some girl yells at 230AM - HEY, I NEED A RIDE HOME, CAN SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME A RIDE HOME? In the morning the clean up crew would pick up all the bottles, glasses, cig butts, paper, garbage - no one bothered trying to clean up the new stains from spilled drinks (hopefully they were from spilled drinks) on the carpet. SO, enough said - I have more, but will stop now. If you are into loud music, and want to party till 3 or 4AM, this is the place to stay. You can walk to your room and not get killed on the road or arrested for DWI.

Even after remodeling the place, I would stay clear unless you have no other options. They need to hire a skilled maintenance person and qualified house staff. The rooms have A.C. but the entrance/lobby does not. They have live bands that play until 1:30 AM on Friday and Saturday. You can hear the music in your room as well. Then you get to listen to the bar customers talk/argue as they leave.

A friend told me it's an excellant supper club with a so-so hotel. That about sums it up. When we first arrived we really were not impressed with the lobby area--dirty worn carpet and very hot. We had to go into the supper club to register, but the staff was very helpful and it went smoothly. Once in the room, the first thing we noticed was the window. It had not gotten it's spring cleaning--maybe hadn't gotten one last year either--looks like it's going to be a 2. Checked the beds--great looking headboards, clean sheets, no sign of bedbugs, room is fairly clean--starting to feel better. Oh Oh, found the smoke detector in a dresser drawer--back to a 2. We went to dinner and told the hostess about the smoke detector (or lack there of). She notified a manager who said that he would fix the problem immediately and he did. We might be back up to a 3. After dinner we went for a walk and found that there is no lake access within walking distance. No big deal, but a little disappointing. Got back to the room just as the music started in the bar. It was LOUD--and went to 1:00 AM--the rating is back down to a 2. In the morning, we found that the coffee maker had not been cleaned and the old coffee packet was still in the machine. Now it's really 2, but--the bathroom is clean, there is good water pressure, the shower drains fast and the towels are clean and fluffy. The bottom line is--we grudgingly give this place a 3. The dinner was great. We had the walleye finger appetizers before the main course and ended up with two much food. Luckily there was a fridge in the room for the leftovers. They went home with us in our cooler, as there was no microwave.

The Otter Lodge (a small 15-20 room hotel) is in a great location right off HWY 78 in Ottertail, MN. I have been in the Lake Ottertail region several times and even eaten at The Otter but never knew it had hotel rooms! The rooms are basic, but comfortable (and some were being updated). The best part about The Otter Lodge is that it is attached to an awesome restaurant and bar. The food was delicious - I recommend the Walleye fingers appetizer! On the weekends from May through September, there is live music every weekend and also live music on occasional weekends the rest of the year (we were lucky to enjoy live music the weekend we were there). There is also a liquor store attached. What more can you need?!? The best part was being able to walk right to our room after a fun night in the restaurant/bar area. Hotel room rates were great - about half the price of the others in the area ($60-$85 depending on the date) Cute little lobby and decent beds. Definitely not high end but cozy enough. Will stay at "The Otter" again for sure!!
