We stayed here for three nights recently, and I think my wife wanted to move in! First of all, the house is beautiful, inside and out. Designed by an architect, every room is large, and has its own private bath. We stayed in the Douglas Room, which my wife chose because it had a restored, antique claw-foot bathtub designed for deep luxurious soaking. The beds may be brand new (I don't know for sure), and the king size mattresses are super-comfortable. We slept like babies. Inside and out, the architecture is something I can't explain in words, but it is of artisanal quality. More than once, my wife said she would loved growing up in that house. As comfortable and nice as they are, the architecture and grounds are only the beginning; there is much to do. Louisiana is already famous for it's abundant wildlife and verdant forests, but this place may be the right in the middle of the best things of the entire state. If you love to bird watch, then put the Atchafalaya Basin trip on your bucket list. We enjoyed bird watching in the Atchafalaya Basin for much of Friday. Osprey nests with parents and offspring were abundant. Get a boat tour and go so far into the swamp you'll wonder if you are dreaming. Spanish moss, old growth cypress trees, alligators, egrets, eagles and species to numerous to name live there. You cannot possibly see them all in one day, but even if you did, you still wouldn’t be able to remember them all. Saturday morning we had a choice of entertainment involving breakfast and dancing. We settled on Cafe Des Amis in downtown Beaux Bridge, and we loved it. People from all over the world were there. Live Zydeco music, a great breakfast with great coffee can be had there. The city of Lafayette is nearby. We ate seafood at a restaurant that was recommended, but I don't recall the name, which isn’t a problem, because half the fun is finding your own cool little places to dine. Lafayette and the surrounding area has dozens and dozens of excellent eateries. You will be delighted to discover them, and I think that the best cajun food often comes from a restaurant that looks like a shack on the outside and a palace on the inside. Susan, the proprietor of Isabelle Inn, was a gracious host and we enjoyed every minute of our visit with her. She runs a clean, well kept establishment and knows a lot about the surrounding area. This is a uniquely beautiful place, where you can find lots of things to do. We danced, enjoyed seafood, and watched birds, but there are plenty of other things to discover and explore. Or, you can just kick back and enjoy a sultry Louisiana afternoon on the patio with some lemonade or wine. We definitely will be going back again.…
