This hotel has a fantastic location. It’s right across from the gorgeous black sand beach. The ocean here is calm and warm. The hotel is far enough out of town you don’t hear and party noise but close enough you can walk. The pool is clean and refreshing. The hosts are very friendly and accommodating. The rooms are clean and spacious. This hotel is a throw back to the early days of tourism in Costa Rica. If you want to experience a quiet and rustic vacation, this is a great place. Just be aware there is no air conditioning at the hotel.

We stayed there for 3 nights and it was a good place but not ideal. +basic but good breakfast (there are 3 same choices everyday) +cheap and fast laundry service - 8 usd, done the same day +easy access to the center of Purto Viejo (3,000.00 crc/5 usd by tuktuk or 20min walking on the beach) -having the ground floor room we could hear all the talks from the neighbours like they were in our room -not very comfy beds -no mosquito nets on the beds The hotel is just across a small road from the beach - as it is Playa Negra (black beach with wet sand) we did not hang out there, definitely preferred the beaches on the other side of the city.

This hotel has the perfect beach front location and is ideally situated if you're looking for a quiet holiday or peace and quiet. The room was clean and the toilet, shower rooms were all ok too, sadly my bed was very uncomfortable and the pillows, well let's just say they need replacing!! The breakfast was very limited (see pictures) no toast, no juice and no milk for the coffee for the first two days!! We were told the restaurant and bar area would be open for us during the evening, however this never opened so we either visited the hotel next door for food and drinks (which were both very good, Hotel Banana Azul) or we went into the town. This is either a 25ish minute walk along the beach or along the road and track, however both are tricky in the dark!! A tuk tuk costs around 2500 colón so there's really no need to risk your life in the dark!!

What I like most about this hotel was it's location: Walk across the dirt road, and you are on the beach. Rooms are rustic, ceiling fans, no AC. Rooms were clean, however, we had a few unwanted guests in the bathroom our first night (cockroaches). It was brought to the attention of management and we were able to change rooms. The hotel appeared to appeal to local families: 7:30 AM, children were playing in the pool. A little to early for me. Breakfast was disappointing, lacking in variety. There was a bar:: Not well attended to or well stocked.

I didn’t stay in the hotel, but only ate dinner. All the chicken and fish were deep-fried and service was very slow. Maybe the hotel and facilities are great and beer is probably good, but don’t eat there.

This small hotel (25 rooms?) has a nice pool, a good hot breakfast, clean rooms, quiet atmosphere, and it is right on the beach. I had a delightful time. Now it is not a 5 star hotel... it didn’t have AC (i didn’t need it at all) nor a TV (why do you need one when you are in nature’s paradise) - but i thoroughly enjoyed myself!

For the price it was everything I hoped for. Going to sleep to the sound of the ocean and waking up to waves was peaceful and our hosts were extremely friendly and helpful. David in particular is a spectacular host. He helped with accommodations and recommendations for activities and was always so polite. Only thing I would say is that the beds are a bit old so if you have a sensitive back, plan accordingly!

After staying in various hotels around Costa Rica I have to say this was our least favorite. First the positives: The hotel is right across from the beautiful beach and offers inviting hammocks and lounge chairs. The pool is large and stays open till 10pm. Breakfast is complimentary and it is buffet style with a good variety of food. Coffee and a water dispenser were always available. The office staff were always very helpful, particularly in finding alternative transportation to Panama when strikes cancelled our shuttles. The negatives: the room! The layout of the room was very odd. We needed 2 beds and ended with a triple, with a twin bed awkwardly in a corner. It became a catch-all area because there was no place to put anything except a small desk. The toilet and shower were separate and the toilet tank water kept running and running until I lifted the lid to fix it (every flush). The shower had no door. We knew there was no air conditioning and were a little reluctant but we were assured that the ocean breezes cooled the room. They did...but only by keeping the balcony doors wide open and dealing with some mosquitos. This wasn't practical during the day and the room was very hot. The windows didn't provide much ventilation. And the room was DARK. Some have called it 'rustic' but it was just...dark and dreary. Not what you'd expect for a beach hotel. We probably didn't choose the room wisely because there were absolutely no amenities. Having a mini fridge and cold beverages is a nice addition in the Tropics. The view was nonexistent...over the roofs of other buildings. Most frustrating of all was the absolutely horrible wifi. It was slow in the room and only minimally faster in the common areas. Face it, even on vacation you need to be connected for making travel arrangements, etc. We found ourselves spending our time at an extremely lovely nearby hotel...using their wifi, booking tours with their agent, and eating in their dining area. Hotel Perla Negra was often empty and sad while this place was lively and busy. All it would take is a little more effort and some upgrades to the rooms. We attempted to move to the other hotel but not surprisingly, there was no vacancy. Sorry, I would not return to this hotel when there are much nicer options nearby.

This hotel is a spot to relax. The ocean lulls you to sleep. It is a short walk to town. Lots of places to eat. There are many small shops. It is definitely rustic, no frills. There is no air conditioning but the fans keep the room cool at night. The staff are accommodating and friendly. David prepares breakfast each morning, the beans and rice are delish! No television, beach great to relax and read.
