Nice clean hostel, in a safe, quiet suburb. Great restaurants and cares close by. Hostel is a bit out of town but very close to the subway, which gets you all over dc, cheaply and easily. Friendly staff, would recommend to all.

I arrived at 11:30pm after a long drive. Though I had already notified the staff I would arrive late, no one was there. The door sign read to call a number if no one answers. I called, no answer, called several times. Even texted. Finally one of the hostle guests saw me and let me in. I waited an hour... More

Just recently stayed here and I’d like to comment regarding some of the poor reviews. This is kind of a homestyle pad more than a standard hostel. Old house with backyard, lots of nooks and crannies. Feels like hippie pad at times, some interesting residents. No organized activities, but good food options in the neighborhood, especially for vegetarians. Kitchen is... More

Unexpectedly nice hostel. My experience with hostels in big cities is that they are too crowded, noisy and rundown. This wasn't true for HI DC at all! The kitchen is absolutely stunning and free breakfast are a good value for money. The only weak point is very little space for your things in the rooms. The lockers are quite big,... More

Stayed at the Hilltop Hostel in Washington in October 2008 during a round the world trip. The hostel was very quirky, with lots of colour. Staff were friendly. Loved the basement! Met some new people and hung out with them playing pool here. Great location, just up the road from the metro train station. Lovely chinese takeaway, alcohol store and... More

As hostels with shared rooms go, this is one of the best I've stayed in. Location is a little to be desired, however, as it is right next to the metro station you can get pretty much anywhere without too much trouble. Locally to the hostel there are a few conveniences however there are also some areas I wouldn't want... More

Stayed in the top floor, wasn't given a hand with my bags, which were heavy. Bedding was old and smelt. The mattress was covered in plastic and looked very dirty.. The house wasn't inviting and smelt, extremely dirty.. On the upside the little town it was located in had plenty of food joints and close to the train station.

Most of the reviews on here have valid points. Yes, the house is old. Yes the house is cluttered and messy, however my fiance' and I had a very pleasant experience while staying here. There is no where you can't get to from here, including Maryland and Virginia. Downtown just a short 10 minute ride on metro, with quick access to numerous tourist spots. Across the street is a lovely park great for a picnic or just laying on blanket and reading a book on a nice day with a 7-11 store next to it for 24 hr convenience that also happens to be a sub police station for a very safe suburban setting. The neighborhood has lots of unique shops, with a CVS and Post Office just blocks away for your shopping convenience. There are also many eateries from different cultures and several neighborhood pubs that serve food also for your enjoyment and relaxation. If you prefer to cook your own food in our kitchen, a grocery store is located just a short walk from the hostel. Need to do some research? Feel free to visit the library 2 blocks away for those of you that are here for internships or need to study. We have a fully stocked kitchen with all appliances, seasonings, and cookware. Our kitchen is open 24 hrs for your use. There is a public computer for those of you without laptops free to use and free wifi that works in dorm rooms and outside. Our lovely back yard is complete with horse shoe pits, deck, table and chairs, couches and a hammock where you can feel free to socialize, party or just relax.
