We stayed in Fort Royal for one night in August 2010. The setting and house are beautiful (although the decor is tired and the dining room is unimaginative and gloomy) but the staff, especially the Manager, completely ruined our stay. If you value customer service I would give this place a wide berth. On arrival we waited for 5 minutes... more

We are just back from a weekend staying at Fort Royal in Rathmullan, Co Donegal and it was about as perfect a short-break as it is possible to get. The hotel is in a stunning location on the shores of Loch Swilly - rolling lawns lead down to the sand dunes and a beautiful wide, gently shelving sandy beach. The... more

Lovely grounds, great location beside great beach for walks etc. Had a nice room with large bay window, comfortable bed, lovely breakfast, nice staff. The only letdown was the shower - it was a hand-held shower over the bath with no shower curtain. No other complaints but the shower definately let it down. I think if you pay E75 per... more

It's not a cheap weekend, but it;s a very nice weekend. It's in a quiet corner of a quiet town, and is a lovley place to spend a relaxing break. The rooms are clean, large and comfortable. The food in the restaraunt is very nice, but again expensive (although this is mostly because the Republic of Ireland is expensive in... more

We stayed 2 nights at the Fort Royal. The grounds are just fantastic, and the house is lovely. The service was also friendly and helpful. Our room was surprisingly modern in appearance, and had a great bed. I have two gripes: some of the other guests were quite loud, and kept us from sleeping. The management doesn't seem to manage... more

We have just returned from three days at Fort Royal and I would like to say what a special place it is. Having read the previous review on my return, I don't agree and consider the complaints a little petty. We had a lovely room overlooking the lough and were able to stroll down to the beach directly from the... more

My husband and I visited Fort Royal for the third year in a row. It is a charming small hotel with lawns that roll directly on to the beach, beautiful manicured gardens and a charming walled kitchen garden. The service is what sets Fort Royal apart from any other hotel you will stay in, the welcome is genuinely warm, the... more

Our family group of two adults and four children loved staying at this hotel. If you are after the generic international specie of hotel - continue looking. However if you prefer to experience a lovely location and very friendly staff - consider this hotel. The hotel itself, once a private residence, has lots of character, has lots of nooks and... more

We have just returned from a super weekend break in Rathmullan staying in the Fort Royal Hotel. The hotel is so peaceful , relaxing and well run in the hands of Tim Fletcher proprietor/manager. We were made most welcome by every member of staff that we came into contact with. The food is also very well done with the use... more
