Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The massive hotel feels like it is trapped in another era, with vast empty banquet areas and a feeling like it's haunted by benevolent old ghosts who've smoked a few too many cigarettes. My travel companions and I ended up in Norden by chance and saw the four stars on the outside of the hotel. It is not truly a four star hotel as you'd find in New York or Paris, but it still was well worth every penny. The staff really made the difference with their quirky and interesting personalities. The bartender reminded us of John Waters, the general manager could get from the front desk to the far end of the hotel in mere seconds, taking care of whatever you may need efficiently and then zipping off to her next task. The other waitstaff were very helpful, giving us great suggestions of where to visit in the area. The breakfast buffet was massive and delicious. This is not a fancy or high end hotel, but for a good clean bed, a great breakfast, good parking, and very entertaining staff for when you're hanging out at the bar, it's all worth the affordable price. And it's located right in the center of town on one of the main shopping streets.

Set within the countryside, only a few seconds off the main road, but far away from noise, with green fields and trees where the eye goes! Round tables with creamy and flowery tablecloths, white candles and bouquets of roses is the inviting cosy and at the same time full of quality setting! We sat in the terrace surrounded by glass doors for a full view. The dish of the season: if you visit around this time, have the white asparagus with salmon which is served with the most generous amount of thick white German asparagus, a product of the area that is only seasonal! Served with Creme hollandaise or warm butter in silver sauceware, and a big portion of tasty boiled potatoes!! A nice rose wine for completion and warm and gentle staff to complete the service!! If I had to think of anything to rank below excellent it would be that there is no sign on the road and easy to miss but then this may be an advantage!! Prices reasonable! Also, ask for the German menu, as the dish wih the asparagus is not included in the English version.

We were moved here when the Hotel Restauarant Smutje found they could not fulfil the reservation we had made 3 months previously (via Booking.com). It has a good central position in the pedestrian area of this small town close to the ferry port serving the Friesian Islands. Free parking alongside the hotel. An old hotel and rather sad. It has large public rooms and its principal purpose appears to be to cater for local functions. Reception was rather off-hand. Room was adequate enough - we were only there for one night - but oddly shaped because a square had been taken out of the middle to create the en-suite facilities. We did not try the restaurant whose menu appeared traditional German with surroundings to match. Served well enough as en route accommodation.
