Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Home from the best weekend spent at the lodge on the loch. What an amazing location it was beautiful. Stunning views from the hot tub in the morning. The facilities in the room were fantastic, our room had a treadmill, jacuzzi bath and it’s own sauna and cold plunge pool. The room was really clean, comfy bed, the food was lovely and the hosts were so helpful and friendly. Highly recommend, we’re already looking to book a stay here again very soon. Loved every minute, didn’t want to come home.

The property is beautifully situated on a golf course fronting on a loch, just off the main road between Aberdeen and Braemar. It's peaceful and quiet. The property itself is very clean and well cared-for, and hosts Jeanne and Derek are welcoming and gracious. The food is delicious and service is quick in their restaurant which overlooks the loch. I've stayed here three years in a row and it feels like coming home.

Comfortable hotel with its own golf course. Operated by a couple who are hands-on with everything. Rooms are ok, but the one ventilation is to open the window. Very scenic location. Internet is spotty. No charger ports. Bathrooms are small, but good laydown space. Don't order the fish and chips, but otherwise the food is ok.

The lodge is in an absolutely stunning location and the room was very nice with an amazing view. Very close to Aboyne itself in the car. My friend and I booked the spa: hot tub/relaxation room which was a 1.5 hour experience. We ate in the restaurant and the meal was good, however, a little bit of background music would have been nice especially as we were the only ones there. I think if you are clear going to this place that it's essentially an amazing B&B with a hot tub and sauna if you choose to book and pay for this facility then you will not be disappointed. The bar facilities are limited and closed around 8.30pm despite it being the weekend but there was a big fridge in the room so luckily we were prepared and had bought some wine and snacks during the day. It was a truly relaxing couple of days and I would definitely go back to have the peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings. If you want a full hotel experience i.e hustle and bustle and a bar which is open until midnight this is not the place to go.

I booked a last minute weekend break on Thursday afternoon. Didn’t look at any reviews beforehand - then looked at the reviews and thought mmmm. I was apprehensive on arrival however I’m so glad that we went. What a fantastic weekend we had! Sauna and hot tub, dinner, chatting with other guests from USA & Belfast and learning about all sorts of things! Derek & Jean are lovely and yes you have to pre-order dinner by 5pm and your breakfast by 10pm….but so what??!!! The Lodge is run by them and I suspect just 2 other members of staff and with costs being what they are these days I don’t think that’s a reason not to go! Beautiful scenery and so quiet - just what we needed!

This is a very odd place to stay. The location is beautiful, and our room had a lovely view of the loch. Our room had formerly been the gym, and still had some gym equipment… The dinners were ridiculously expensive for mediocre food. We would not recommend this place.

One of the worst lodging experiences I've had, made worse by the fact that it was implied that I was ridiculous for bringing up complaints. - When the bathroom sink was turned on the flow was too powerful for the basin and it would splash all over the person. It was hard to remember to turn water on slowly and we had to change clothes multiple times. When this was mentioned they said "oh, it gets everyone!" (so... maybe fix it?) - There was an emergency exit sign above the sliding door in our room and the second night the emergency exit light above it came on at 11 pm making it difficult to sleep. They said "It does that sometimes, you should have just put a towel over it." - Our room was off the sauna and the day we were leaving the sauna and hallway between our room and the primary hallway smelled like a dead rat. I have a reasonable tolerance for bad smells but this was so bad that we had to open the sliding door to air our room out after having the door to the hall open for mere seconds. They said the sewer backs up sometimes. No apology. On the plus side it was a beautiful view and a spacious room. However, I would not recommend staying there unless you have no other options.

We had a very unpleasant stay due to the owner’s attitude towards us. Jean was rude and arrogant on several occasions. There were many occasions but to name but a few…we accidentally referred to the breakfast as a full English when we ordered, instead of a full Scottish…she shouted very loudly that they didn’t do English! She reluctantly provided 3 extra teabags and fresh milk to our room. She made us feel very uncomfortable for even asking…she even advised us the we could purchase milk from the shop a couple of miles away for our tea ! The spa was a huge disappointment. It consisted of a hot tub, and a very small sauna…max 3 people… and a plug -in couch that vibrated…not an actual masseuse…the website advertising a luxury spa is very misleading. The view of the loch from our bedroom would have been lovely if our blinds hadn’t been broken ! The breakfast was ok, except that there were no breakfast teabags, instead there was a large teapot on a warmer with tea stewing, instead of individual fresh pots of tea on the tables, bearing in mind that people were coming down to breakfast at different times…unpleasant. I will agree with a previous review that said that if your face fit’s you’re ok…ours obviously didn’t. The Lodge is advertised as a 4 Star with the AA and the ScottishTourist Board. We believe these stars were awarded a long time ago and need to be reviewed. There is no evidence of this fine dining as advertised. The food on offer was a typical pub menu. Jean should not be in the hospitality business. We would not recommend this place and we would not go again.
