First day of arrival, didn't have hot water...but the owner solved the problem by the next day. The stairs were a little bit steep and the room condition was average. Overall, it was worth it especially for the sunset.

We arrived in Manarola by car, our tour company driver phoned ahead as we arrived and Giuliana was waiting for us near the church. There is limited access to cars, our driver was allowed in to drop us off. We were prewarned by the company to travel light and not to take our suitcases, which we left at our hotel in Florence for safekeeping at the conceirge's suggestion. The original plan was to leave them at the Florence Railway left luggage which would have cost around 40 Euros for two days so that was a good saving. Giuliana led us up about 30 low steps to a level path which in turn led us to the bottom of a double steep staircase. We went up to our room with Giuliana's instructions to go to her restaurant later with our passports. When we did go later there was no sign of Giuliana, her staff were very busy but one took copies of our passports then asked us to pay. I told him there was nothing to pay as it was booked through our tour company which he accepted. This was all rather odd and unprofessional in my opinion. The room is basic no frills accommodation, spotlessly clean and with a magical view of the village and the ocean from the tiny front balcony. Surprisingly there were tea/coffee making facilities with an electric kettle and a few supplies which are not replenished during your stay so make sure you take your own extras. There is no fridge, I think a small one could be supplied at very small cost which would make such a difference particularly if you were there for a longer stay as you have to go lower down into the village for a breakfast café or shop. The bed is fairly comfortable and we slept well, one night with the windows open, the next with the aircon on, we stayed on Sunday on Monday and there were no night noise issues from the restaurant called Billys below. The church bells peal from about 5am so the aircon came in handy to block the noise. There is a very handy washing line attached to your front balcony. This accommodation is a bit of a trade off, you could stay lower in the village but you wouldn't have the view to die for and then you would have to climb up to Billys which is a Manarola institution and was literally on our doorstep. The food was amazing and the restaurant has a very good reputation with a visit a must do! There is a restaurant near the sea front which serves bacon and egg with toast and a cuppa for 7 Euros. There is a dodgy looking ATM which worked the first time we used it, grudgingly spitting out my card but the second time we used it, it wasn't working so make sure you are not reliant on it and take your cash with you. I was a little apprehensive about the climb up and down after reading reviews on TA but to get down into the village there is a gradually sloping pathway with some steps here and there. In saying that he village is definitely not for people who are disabled or with mobility issues. We didn't catch the train but instead opted to see the other villages by boat, a hop on hop off ticket for 4 villages cost 15 Euros each (Corniglia is not accessible by boat). This was enough for us for one day and gave us the opportunity to wander around each village at our leisure. Our two day stay was a welcome reprieve in a very busy Italian trip, not really long enough to experience all that the area has to offer but so enjoyable and relaxing. This place is authentic Italy despite the tourism, observing the village life with people going about their daily activities is part and parcel of staying here and the Locanda Giuliana is perfectly placed to see all, sitting on the balcony with your morning cuppa and watching the village come to life is priceless :)

This was't hotel nor B&B. It was an old apartment with steep narrow stairs and NO ELEVATOR. Don't try this if you have any luggage at all. And in the room, we found ants everywhere!!! On the floor, on the bed, everywhere!!!! It was so disgusting... You need to bring your passport to the restaurant near the train station and it is not that close, all the way at the bottom of the hill. They served us a breakfast of one piece of cake and coffee, so my husband ate it; then we were told our plan did not include breakfast, so we needed to pay. The piece of the cake with coffee for 10 euro each??? Even only one of us ate the cake, it was fixed price, so they insisted us to pay. Wow.... If we knew they will charge us, we didn't eat "that" for sure.

I had to cancel my booking from this apartment due to an injury as it was unsuitable for me. I had given my credit card details to the local booking agent on Manorola, only to be told that payment had to in cash. After cancelling I was told I had to pay a percentage as it was short notice to cancel, fair enough, i will wait for an account. On checking my credit card transactions I found that this company had taken the money out, without my authorization. I wont get burnt again and I find this very unprofessional. So be very wary of the local agent!!!!!!!

PROS - Basic room with white ceramic tiled floor- nothing too special. It had a tiny balcony overlooking the town, bay and opposite hillside which was a great view. - It was about 100 steps down from the very top of the town where the carpark is and about 30 steps up to the room itself – very narrow and steep, hard with bags. If you come by train you would have to go up about 200 steps - so travel light! - We ate at a restaurant run by the landlady’s family. Absolutely fantastic food – so fresh – many memorable dishes like the hand-made pasta, the grilled vegetable antipasti, the seafood soup. They generously gave us breakfast for 5 euros each – toast, jams, juice, coffee/tea, little cakes. - Free WiFi at the restaurant but not in room. CONS - Not for people who want to go back to the room during the day ( because of the steps) – stay down near the train station or at another town.

This was my favorite leg of our Italy trip. I loved hiking from town to town. When we were there, the segment of the trail from Manarola to Corniglia was shut down due to landslides (this has been a problem for a while as my cousin was there the previous summer and the same portion was closed) and the trains were on strike as well. We were forced to take the lesser traveled trail (I believe it was trail #9). It was very challenging but the views from the top were beyond rewarding. I would recommend anyone staying in Manarola to try it. The room itself was very clean. The bathroom was a decent size, but it was awkward stepping out of the shower and avoiding the toliet. The owner met us at her restaurant in the middle of the day and then directed us to the church at the top of the hill to meet the lady who would show us to our room. We had read the reviews that the owner was very rude, and she was somewhat curt to my boyfriend but not really that bad at all. Her husband (we assume it was her husband) insisted that we have a complimentary glass of wine or expresso at the restaurant. He was quite friendly and we appreciated the kind gesture. The stairs are very steep and I would not recommend staying here if you are not in good shape. Getting up to the apartment is the first challenge and then making it to the room presents another difficulty. The stairs going up to the room would be pretty much impossible for an elderly person to climb as they pretty much go straight up and you almost need to crawl . We are in good shape and we could hardly handle going up and down them. The room does not include breakfast, but they did have glasses available if you wanted to buy your own drinks and bring them up to the room and also provided complimentary tea and coffee in the room. I would definitely stay here again and I would come back to Manarola any time.

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights in September. There are lots of stairs leading up to this hotel, as others have stated; however, the stairs leading from the road (which is really a walkway) to your room is at best 5% of the total number of stairs you'll climb just to get from the train to the higher part of town. That being said, the building's stairs are quite steep and we REALLY would have appreciated some lighting when returning at night and tripping over stairs. They have lights in the hall, but the switches are not in obvious places and are on a timer, so they were always off when we needed them. If you stay here, pay close attention to the stair layout and locate the light switches in the hallway before it gets dark. If the stairs are going to bother you, I would recommend staying in Monterosso. Before booking, we were deciding between Manarola and Monterosso, and opted for Manarola since it was less touristy. After visiting both towns, we wish we had stayed in Monterosso. There are more restaurants, shops, and of course beaches. Manarola wasn't bad, but just not much going on after about 8, and since the trains stop running before late, we had to return home before we necessarily wanted to. The noise from Billy's is a little loud at night, although we were there during the weekend. We actually ate at Billy's one night and really enjoyed it. We made reservations earlier in the day and when we arrived there was another couple also waiting on the walkway right in front of our building. The place was full and Billy seemed aggravated that he couldn't accommodate us even though we had reservations. So he ran around grabbing tables and chairs from storage and set us and the other couple up right on the walkway in front of our room! Upon arrival, we spoke with the owner(?) at their restaurant, and were told to walk up to the church square where someone would meet us. We then met the other woman who showed us up to the room. Not extremely friendly but not rude either, and seemed a bit aggravated at my slow speed while lugging our luggage up all the hills and steps. The room has an air condition, which was much needed for our stay; however, there's no refrigerator. The balcony is okay, but really very small and close to the adjacent room. Bed is pretty stiff. It's about what is expected for the price, and we knew what we were getting, so no surprises really. Would stay in Monterosso if we had to do it over again.

We stayed here in September, and the climb to the rooms are exactly that, a climb! We were thrilled with view and the small veranda that opened onto a view of Manarola and the sea. Although not modern we found our room clean and the beds were comfortable. There was a small table and a closet to store our luggage. As the other poster said, one night the noise from Billy's was impossible to drown out. Loud partying went on until 2:00 in the morning. This is not the fault of Locanda Giuliana, but did put a damper on the otherwise great place to stay. We did have a breakfast plan, and had a very nice meal at Portoffinico in the village.

Be aware that this room requires climbing many stairs to access it. Even going the shortest way there is a steep hill to climb before attacking over 40 steps in the streets and then 2 steep flights to the room. I loved the exercise it required to get to the room and the view is the best. The bathroom had some mould growing on the ceiling and in the grout of the tiles. The room was noisy so I slept with the air conditioning to drown out the noise of Restaurant Billy whose room I looked down on. Those narrow streets do carry the sounds well.

We just spent 3 days in Manarola and stayed at this location with our 9 and 20 year old girls. We stayed in rooms 1 & 2 which are beside each other and have balconies facing the sea over the town. This is a perfect location to enjoy Manarola from, and we highly recommend those rooms. Note that my wife is very sensitive to noise at night and this room was no problem at all. Manarola is quiet at night and there is a quiet in-room air conditioner that adds a bit of a breeze if desired. Room 3 also looks good but its view is out the back side of Manarola to the sea rather than the inward facing village view which I feel is the postcard shot. We gave the girls one room and we had our own room, each with its own bathroom and shower. The rooms are very modern and clean. We also went for the breakfast at 5 euros each. It is served in a very good restaurant that is owned by the same woman that runs the rooms, the fabulous and friendly Giuliana (who speaks French and Italian by the way). The restaurant is right downtown on the main street so you have to make your way there in the morning, but the bread, cheese, cappucinos, juice, pastries and fruits made it more than worthwhile. We travelled to all of the Cinque Terre towns and feel that this location was truly the ideal spot to vacation from. We took the train each day to Monterossa for our beach time, and really enjoyed coming back to this location every night. Highly recommended.
