We stopped off on our way to the Scottish Isles for 2 nights. We were meet by a helpful barmaid who showed us to our rooms. Be prepared for a trek along old windy corridors and up step stairs, which was not a problem for us but if you had young children I could see it being a bit of... More

just returned from a two night stay at the black Bull and again I find it hard to understand my fellow creatures. The majority of people seem to dredge the internet trying to find the best deal available then go back and condemn it because it is not 5*. IN THIS WORLD THERE ARE NO BARGAINS YOU GET WHAT YOU... We booked The Black Bull as a stop over on our journey. We were looking forward to the stay. Whilst Moffat is a lovely town, The Black Bull is not great. The pub is old fashioned and shabby. The room was tiny as was the shower cubicle. We found it difficult to sleep due to the noise from people outside... More

I stayed at the black bull for one night and that was enough. On my arrival there was nobody to meet us at the reception area apart from the big dog sitting in behind the desk. Had to wait a good few minutes to get taken up to the room as they could not find the keys. Went to put the... More

This hotel is just 2 miles from the motorway and the rooms are very clean and comfortable, the food is the best I have had with a great menu. The staff are first class and the atmosphere with both staff and locals makes it a wonderful relaxing stay. Yes the lounge needs some new chairs but that does not spoil... More

Online looked good, reviews ok but in reality was a huge disappointment. No staff on arrival, despite pressing bell, had to go find them. Entrance was full of kids toys, very messy and piles of clothes and things on floor! Our "en suite" was more of a cupboard than a bathroom, no room to turn around in, no towel rail,... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Black Bull Hotel in the heart of Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway was established in 1568. It was used as the headquarters for Graham of Claverhouse and his dragoons. They were sent by the English king to ruthlessly put down religious rebels in the South-West Borders. Another famous patron who we are more proud of was the Scottish Bard, Robert Burns who we are certain spent many hours drinking and in keeping with his reputation, womanising. In fact, the great man etched a poem onto one of the windows in our self named "Burns Room" and we have a replica of this window for guests and patrons to see. Steeped in History and amongst one of the oldest hotels in Scotland, the Black Bull provides a comfortable and lively base, serving day trippers, tourists, business visitors and the local community alike with superb food served daily. Whatever your tipple, we have a wide range of cask ales, draught beers and lagers and whisky. We regularly have entertainment on in both of our bars, Traditional Folk music in our lounge bar and anything from Kareoke to Live Bands in our railway bar. Whatever your reasons for travel, be sure to drop into The Black Bull for a visit! ... more   less
