We were a mixed group of 7 in the area for the weekend as some of the party were completing the Keswick to Barrow and Fred Whitton challenges. The location of the hostel was perfect for our purposes and the setting was stunning - a highlight was spotting a few red squirrels around the beautiful waterfall behind the hostel while... More

We hiked along the Cumbria Way and spent a night at Derwentwater Youth hostel. Really nice and helpful staff. Food was good. Location is brilliant and facilities are great. Very good atmosphere. On a negative though: Tired interior, small wooden Bunkbeds, Toilets far from Dorm (in our case). Would stay there again but place could do with a makeover!

Had a great experience here. My friend and I were travelling aroung the UK, and we made a trip to the Lake District. We had a wonderful time, and the location of this hostel it great. It's outside of Keswick, so its really peaceful. Its only a couple mile hike to town, or you can hop on the ferry. There... More

I spent a weekend at Barrow House recently with friends and family. We had two family rooms between us which were spacious and comfortable. The bunk beds and bedding were what to expect from youth hostel accommodation, they were well worn but clean! The whole feel of the place was very relaxed, the staff were friendly and extremely helpful (for... More

I discovered Derwentwater Youth Hostel when I saw their little sign on a gate at the side of the Watendlath Road (just below Ashness Bridge). The sign also advertised simply served drinks and cakes - it had to be good! I went through the gate and followed the path through the hostel grounds. The next wonderful discovery was a beautiful... I stayed at this hostel while doing a winter skills course so I didn't actually choose it myself. I'd never stayed in a multi-occupation dorm set up before. My previous experiences of youth hostels had always been in family rooms. For me, that was the only real downside and I guess at the price you can't complain. Its just that... More

Great base for a trip to the north lakes. Off the main stretch which is nice, there is a bus route and ample parking. There are loads of walking trails, a waterfall on the premises and the lake is only a stones throw away. There is a pool table, TV lounge (a little on the small side) There is a... More

Booked for a weekend for a 16 all male party (which I pre-warned the hostel about). The staff were exceptionally helpful the whole weekend and amenable to our requests (later evening access for example). Plenty of advice and help was given to suggestions for places for our group to go. The breakfasts were good and did the job setting us... More

Firstly the good points- friendly staff who are available to answer any queries plus the location is superb, the house itself built in the 1790's still has original georgian features which I loved. The ladies toilets I used on the first floor were dated but very clean. The waterfall at the rear of the hostel is great as are the walks... More

Stayed here recently for one night with a couple of friends for my stag do. Staff were very accommodating and understanding of our situation as stag parties are not always welcomed! The hostel is reasonably clean, the beds were clean and comfortable and the breakfast was good. There was free table tennis available too which is always a bonus! The... More
