I went with my husband and childrenin the August 2012 and we all reallly enjoyed our stay. The staff were really helpful and approachable and able to offer great advice for tourist attractions suitable for children that were easy to get to, for example the train museum. The decor was very tired and the room was basic the hostel is... More

booked the YHA last minute ,paid only £40 for a room for 4 people. For what we payed it was a bargain. The location is ideal, its right near the river and the 15 min walk along the riverside into York is beautiful. The staff are all very friendly and always happy to help. The rooms are basic but clean and... More

Backpacking with a family feel. Great value. Excellent staff, big breakfast. short walk to town. Shared facilities were clean and plenty of hot water. Clean bedding and spacious room (4-bed dormitory).

The building certainly justifies the title 'hostel' - bunk beds, communal kitchen et al. We had a family room with broken furniture, dirty carpets and a warm welcome from a pile of dead insects on the windowsill, not bad for over £100 per night!!! That's right - over £100 per night! The price of a decent 3/4* hotel. The staff... More

great city, great people and and a great first experience staying in a YHA. The children loved it and enjoyed making new friends every night. We stayed in the family room...it is what it is, low cost basic accommodation. It would make such a difference if the carpets in the rooms could be replaced? I would absolutely stay there again,... The staff were friendly and the hostel was clean and well kept. Between the key card entry and the in room lockers I felt quite secure. The laundry facilities were great. The hostel is a bit of a distance away from the train station and the city centre but the walk is beautiful!! I was there for a Friday and... More

I stayed in a twin room with my partner. It was an ok place to stay and reasonably priced. The staff were really friendly. The carpets throughout could do with being replaced as they were stained and a bit gross and made the place feel a bit dirty. Having said that, I would stay here again. It was a lovely... More

We are a family of two girls (aged 9 and 13). We had a 4 bunk room, room number 24 which included a basin in the room and had plugs. The bathroom and toilets were outside our rooms. They were clean but small but then we are used to camping and had no problem. The shower's are a bit odd... More

First impression thought it was a beautiful building.Couldn't believe wi fi was so expensive 50p for 10 mins. When we got to our room it was grubby but the bedding was clean. Eight people in a small room it was very hot even though the windows were open. Went to the toilet the sanitary bins were overflowing soiled pads showing. I... More

Set in a historic sort of a building where a certain chocolate company (?) used to exist, YHA York has a certain 70's feel to it, especially in the newer sections. The main complaint is that it's quite a bit of a walk from the old part of the town and from the railway station; local buses exist, but as... More
