I have just come back from staying in the York hostel. They've obviously spent a lot of money making the seating area very swish, but they seem to think that appearances are more important than substance. If you were in a dorm, as I was, you could see where the money wasn't spent. There were eight people in a room... More

...to plug into all the power-points in my room!!!!! An unusual intro I know, but I never thought I'd ever find a Youth Hostel (or similiar style accommodation) where there we MORE power-points available in a room than things to plug in; I enjoyed a great nights sleep last night in a very reasonably priced two beded room that had... A friend and I previously booked online for one overnight stay as we were joining a group of motorcyclists to ride through the Dales to the Lake District. On arrival, we discovered that the grounds were quite spacious and so no problem for the amount of motorcycles departing from there the next morning. We were greeted at Reception by the... More

I went with my husband and childrenin the August 2012 and we all reallly enjoyed our stay. The staff were really helpful and approachable and able to offer great advice for tourist attractions suitable for children that were easy to get to, for example the train museum. The decor was very tired and the room was basic the hostel is... More

booked the YHA last minute ,paid only £40 for a room for 4 people. For what we payed it was a bargain. The location is ideal, its right near the river and the 15 min walk along the riverside into York is beautiful. The staff are all very friendly and always happy to help. The rooms are basic but clean and... More

Backpacking with a family feel. Great value. Excellent staff, big breakfast. short walk to town. Shared facilities were clean and plenty of hot water. Clean bedding and spacious room (4-bed dormitory).

The building certainly justifies the title 'hostel' - bunk beds, communal kitchen et al. We had a family room with broken furniture, dirty carpets and a warm welcome from a pile of dead insects on the windowsill, not bad for over £100 per night!!! That's right - over £100 per night! The price of a decent 3/4* hotel. The staff... More

great city, great people and and a great first experience staying in a YHA. The children loved it and enjoyed making new friends every night. We stayed in the family room...it is what it is, low cost basic accommodation. It would make such a difference if the carpets in the rooms could be replaced? I would absolutely stay there again,... The staff were friendly and the hostel was clean and well kept. Between the key card entry and the in room lockers I felt quite secure. The laundry facilities were great. The hostel is a bit of a distance away from the train station and the city centre but the walk is beautiful!! I was there for a Friday and... More
