I have heard that this place used to be terrible and unsafe, but I stayed there in December 2012 and it was quite the opposite. It's two stories high and they have plans to build a third floor. All of the other reviews for Hotel Plaza Zipolite are out of date. I stayed there for 3 weeks in March 2012. There is now a second story, swimming pools, paved courtyard, and an outdoor bar was being built while I was staying there. An expansive deck looks out over the beach. “Definitely not a safe place”

The hotel is directly on the beach and strangers can move around unnoticed. There is no security or any kind of surveillance. I'm speaking by personal experience as a relative of mine got murdered in that hotel last January. I would recommend staying in a safer place...
