The beach and the beach bar area is wonderful but the condo we stayed in was anything but. The front door didn’t have a welcome mat like all the other units, the door wouldn’t open all the way, getting stuck on the floor. The musty odor was pretty intense when we first walked in. The furniture was dated and the recliner that reminded me of the chair on Pee-Wee’s playhouse wasn’t functioning. The bed was anything but comfortable, only two sheets on it, no blanket or comforter. There were no sheets for the pull out sofa, just a thin blanket available. The bathroom was gross, the vanity was about to fall apart, the small shower was dark and the shower curtain wasn’t the cleanest. Sons light bulbs were burned out over the vanity. The kitchen was suspect, the cabinets felt like they were going to break when opening them. The stove was absolutely disgusting, rust and grease stains all over it, no desire to use it. The outside furniture required a tetanus shot to use, every thing was rusted and stained. Most units had 2 beach loungers, our had one broken one. The back sliding door wouldn’t lock properly, the manager came down, said it would be fixed the next day, nope.later that week, we asked the manager for Beach lounger replacements, said ok, will take a look and replace, never did. Anytime we asked management, the response was, that is up to the owner. We obviously got a unit that has been neglected by the owner and felt ripped off. The view was mostly of beach lounger storage, half the view was pretty. This property would be great for spring breakers who want to be 30 steps from the beach bar and don’t care about the room. This room was like a sleazy motel room you would rent by the hour, not a family tropical vacation! The pictures when we booked didn’t seem to match the property. If you book this property, make sure you DO NOT get unit A101, you will be incredibly disappointed and feel unhappy with your situation.

Response from Bill Rynne, Owner at Sapphire Beach Resort Condominiums

I can't say it often enough- you need to deal directly with the owner of the unit you want to stay in at Sapphire Beach. Every unit is independently owned, maintained, decorated and managed by the unit owner. A 101 ownership situation is or has been in dispute so as you found out little upkeep has been done. Most owners work very hard to maintain their unit and offer a great experience but you don't get the same treatment if you go through a third party or rental agent. Use VRBO or a similar site and choose a condo at a location you like, that is furnished to your taste, and you will have a great time.

The attraction for me with this resort is the beach. Love that it has both the usual beach activities with the bonus of snorkeling off the beach. The resort provides snorkel equipment for you to use which is acceptable quality. Beach towels also. Nice pool but the pool bar was closed while we were there. Units are a little dated but the bed and pillows were comfortable. Our TV did not work but weren't planning on watching it anyway. We did not use the restaurant here but the beach bar was okay though it closes a little early (8:00). Every other day maid service was nice. Never could get the floors clean so wipe you feet off before getting into bed. The office staff was just okay. No explanation of all the resort amenities and would be nice if there was a little map. Odd that the office does not open until 10:00. The coffee shop was very good and had nice bakery items as well. There is a taxi stand on site and it is only $6/person to go to Red Hook which has a variety of restaurants and bars as well as boat tours. For the price we would definitely come back.

Response from Bill Rynne, Owner at Sapphire Beach Resort Condominiums

I am glad to hear that you enjoyed Sapphire and plan to return. In the interest of informing future travelers please let me explain a few things. Sapphire Beach Resort and Marina is made up of independently owned condominiums and slips The condo owners furnish their units to their individual taste so each unit is different. Each owner also determines who they use for their rental agent. Some owners use a company that has an office at the resort but many owners use other companies. So for example not all units provide snorkel equipment, daily fresh towels or cleaning every other day. At Sapphire it is important to choose the unit you want to stay in and work directly with the owner to determine what is provided.

This property is clean, modern & well-done. Loved the ground floor - walk-in, walkout & covered patio in building D, right next to the pool. Although we didn't use that much as we were there for the beach!! Short 5 minute walk to Sudi's for good food & great island atmosphere. Then only a couple of minutes walk in the other direction gets you to the beautiful white sandy beach, and more food choices! There is a beautiful restaurant called Sea Salt that was perfect for our 20th anniversary dinner. Then downstairs you can grab a pizza or fish tacos & onion rings by the bar. For breakfast we enjoyed the specialty coffees & sandwiches. Very nice boutique for shopping that we visited for clothing & souvenirs. Many activities, taxis available & excursions for entertainment. About 40 minutes from the airport. Our 1 yr old's first time in the ocean. Perfect beach for us! This was our 1st time at Sapphire & our 3rd time at St. Thomas. We will be back!

We love sapphire beach. Great snorkeling, great beach bar, breakfast shop, beach boutique and a high end restaurant. The issue was with our unit C107. The AC no matter what it’s set at never goes below 75. Unit is dated. We lost power for close to 30 hours and Once was overnight when the outside temp was 88 degrees. Owner was not accommodating. The ppl on both sides of us were put somewhere for the night. In an effort to not get to wordy, some draw’s literally would fall out when opened, ceiling fan on bedroom did not work. No batteries in lanterns or flashlights, screen was broke, glass coffee table was so unstable. I could go on, but in a nutshell I could never recommend this property. If the owner/manager rebukes this I have Pics and texts to substantiate. Go to Sapphire, it’s great, just not this unit.

Gail It's unfortunate you had a less than desirable stay. Most of the owners at Sapphire work very hard to maintain their condos and as you mentioned Sapphire is a great place to vacation. I'm not sure if you looked at reviews of the unit before you stayed but definitely write a review on what ever site you used so that future renters can avoid this unit.

We stayed in a wonderful condo overlooking the marina (building F 306) in the first week of November. This was the end of the off season when the temperatures are cooler (80s-90s), rain more prevalent and the area is not as crowded. Our suite was very comfortable with a full kitchen, king bed, two baths (great showers!), AC, laundry, and decks on two floors giving a stunning view of St John. The owner had provided beach equipment such as beach chairs, snorkel and fins, umbrellas and more, though these items could be rented at the beach house if we needed more. The condo owner provided a great concierge service who recommended an outstanding jeep and snorkel tour operator. The beach house had a bar open to the wonderful white sand beach and had attentive professional bartenders. Bar food, coffee and pizza were immediately available as well as a fine restaurant. A coral reef was literally steps away in the water where we saw great coral formations, fish and even sea turtles! There was always a taxi available, which is good as the area is not walkable and even nearby destinations require motor transport. Aside from depending on taxis we experienced few negatives. There was off season maintenance on the roofs and patios of some of the buildings while we were there but it was minimally distracting. On our second day there was an impressive rain storm which knocked out the power intermittently throughout the day. The island does lose power regularly during storms but comes back within a few hours. Sapphire Beach Condos do not have a back up generator. We seldom saw the mosquitos but did wake up with itchy bug bites every morning. The shop has coral friendly sunscreen and bug spray for sale. The nearby town of Red Hook had several solid restaurants, a grocer, modest shopping and a ferry that would take you to St John or to the main town, Charlotte Amalie (the latter ferry opens in mid November for the busy season). Other restaurants, beaches and attractions are a short cab ride away. We recommend Pesce Italian and Agave Mexican in Red Hook. Also Pangea next door to the Sapphire Beach property was a wonderful "fairy lit treehouse" experience with top notch food. We had a truly relaxing, worry free vacation at Sapphire Beach. Our expectations were definitely exceeded!

Do NOT rent any condo here! The place is old and worn. It's just sad, honestly. I rented through VRBO as the condo, owners Jack and Win, had all positive reviews. When we arrived first in our shared taxi, the entire taxi looked at the "Resort" and went quiet. I didn't want to get out, but we did. Upon entering, I was hit with a musty, smell. There was a giant party going on in front of our deck. People were vaping, smoking, and drunk. When I tried to open the sliding glass door (the only light in the condo comes from that - there are no windows), A metal pole fell on my finger. I immediately called the owner, Win, and told her I didn't feel safe, that I was injured, and that we wanted to leave. She BEGGED me to stay. She offered me a bottle of wine and told me to walk to the point and we could talk in the morning. Well, I did not take the wine, and when we walked to the point, we saw the pool - which was cloudy and disgusting. There were signs saying "Posted - Keep Out". I spend the entire evening trying to find another place to stay. Thankfully, I did. I called Win the next day and told her we were leaving. She started yelling at me that if we weren't happy we should have left as soon as we arrived. Um, I tried that and she begged me to stay - again, offering wine. I offered to pay for that night - as we did sleep there (we had nowhere else to go). She was horrible - like a completely different person from the night before. We left and stayed elsewhere - paying for another resort for 6 nights. I called VRBO and they "assured" me I'd get my money back and they bumped my case up to "Health and Safety." When I got back, I still had no resolution. I emailed the owners and said I'd have to leave a negative review, which I did. Then the management company called me and tried to "bribe" me with a partial refund to take down my negative review. Did I need the money back - YES - was it the right thing to do? they were going to make me electronically sign that I would never post a negative review. I just couldn't do it. The next thing I knew, the owners alerted VRBO about my negative review and VRBO took it down saying it was EXTORTION! What recourse do I have, other than leaving a review? I just wanted my money refunded. I am a teacher, a wife, and a mom of four children. We saved a long time for this trip. I have never left a bad review - EVER.

When I read your review I really wondered where you were coming from. Your interpretation of Sapphire as being old and run down is the exact opposite of most of the reviews left by other travelers. There are a few places at the resort that are being worked on but the buildings are constantly being updated and are well maintained. An example you cited was the pool and you mention that there was a sign saying "keep out". The sign was there because the pool was being worked on that day. You neglected to mention that the pool was at the point surrounded by the ocean with gorgeous views. Evidently you were unhappy with the unit you rented, but that's one condo not the entire resort. All the condos are individually owned and maintained so one condo is not indicative of the entire resort. Most owners maintain their units very well. I am sorry you did not have a good experience at the condo or with VRBO but I don't think your review was a fair one.

I rented a condo in building A through Vrbo. Overall it's a lovely destination. The view from my unit was stunning. The white sand beach and turquoise water are just gorgeous. The unit itself was ok- the furniture and appliances were all dated. The facility has a beach bar, with drinks and food offerings and a fancy restaurant upstairs on a deck with $50 entrees. My only gripe with the bar area was they play the music way too loud, right next to my unit. They blasted sub-par music during the day and there was a wedding one night with terrible music blaring. Luckily, I brought a sound machine to drown in out. Also the furniture at the bar was very dated, the cushions were dirty and torn, just felt dirty to sit on with stains and tears. Same goes for the beach chairs they have the old plastic ones from the 80's that have rusty metal and old plastic binding. In the morning visitors have the cabana boys put out their beach chairs for the day so the whole beach gets filled with unsightly empty chairs unfortunately. The pool is in a really pretty location, very well designed. Wish they had a hot tub. There was a Bar by the pool, but it was run down and not maintained, didn't seem to be operating any of the days I went down there. There is a lovely little coin-operated laundry room next to the marina. I enjoyed doing laundry there for a couple of hours. A great view of the boats and friendly people to meet. You get tokens from the dock master office a few doors down. There is a little bathroom with a shower stall for boaters. My biggest issue was with transportation. Nothing was convenient. I like to walk when I'm on vacation. You cannot walk anywhere. The streets are narrow, winding, no sidewalks, steep hills, dangerous drivers. It's just not walker-friendly at all. If you do not rent a car you have to rely on taxi's which I found to be super frustrating. They charge per person, and change the pricing based on how much they think they can get from you if you don't know, or declare the price straight up. They don't use meters or have set pricing on a sign. A simple drive from the resort to red hook should cost $6 per person. I had drivers trying to charge $10 or $12. Which adds up there and back and multiple runs. Or a ride one mile up the street they tried to charge $15. When I needed a ride to the airport it's supposed to be $23 but my driver insisted $35 since I was one person. Just a pain in the ass and made the transportation anywhere annoying and not relaxed. The way the resort is nuzzled into the bay it's blocked on both sides by a wall retainer and then the marina so you are locked in and have to use the taxi service which I really disliked. I don't mind being fair, it's just a bad feeling being swindled repeatedly. My second biggest issue was the sand fleas- they were so bad at dusk and dawn, which are my favorite times to enjoy the beach. I was not alone, many bare legs I saw were covered to the point of looking like an infectious disease. Not sure why they were so bad. I've never experienced anything like it on other beaches. Made me want to avoid the beach, which is supposed to be the main attraction. There was bug spray in my unit but it was not coral reef friendly. I would say don't drink the tap water. My Vrbo owner said it was fine to drink but it kinda made me sick to my stomach and tasted like dirty bleach water. The little convenient store by the bar sold small bottles of water for $4 per bottle. I love to drink water so that made me feel bad to consume so much unnecessary plastic. They also sold coffee and bagels and other little overpriced things. There was a food mart grocery up the road, I think it was $22 drive there and back. Groceries were very expensive. Almost everything is imported. Probably cheaper to eat out honestly. But I like making most of my meals healthy. The area was a little sketchy for a solo female traveler. If you do go somewhere to run a quick errand, ask your taxi to wait for you to bring you back. The incentive to get double is enough to make them wait.

Response from Bill Rynne, Owner at Sapphire Beach Resort Condominiums
Responded 29 Apr 2023
I am glad you enjoyed your stay at Sapphire but a few things might have made it better. St Thomas is not a walking island. The roads are narrow and there are no sidewalks so any expectation of long walks on the beach are going to be limited to the beach and grounds at all the resorts. Town has sidewalks and is very walk able and historic if you enjoy that kind of thing. The taxi rates are government regulated and a driver risks losing there lively hood for overcharging. The rates are posted in various locations but you can search for and print a rate card to keep with you if there is any question. The sand flees are a pretty well known issues on the beaches in the islands. At dawn and dusk when the sand cools they come out. Some people (me) never gets bitten others can get nasty bites but a bug repellent with deet or skin so soft will prevent it. I tell people that if they drink bottled water at home then do so there, I drink tap in both and have had no issues. One option you might have explored is a company called Sapphire Provisioning ( an independent service company). They will grocery shop for you and deliver it for a small fee and they have many beach toys or appliances they can rent to you for your stay. I think had you known about this information that the condo owner could have provided it would have made for great vacation.

Sapphire Beach is a good location to stay in St. Thomas for a great view of St. John and easy access to Red Hook and their marina and restaurants. The property has several restaurants, Sudi's, the Beach Bar, Sea Salt, and Pizza Pie. The units are okay - studios, just a room with a bed, living area and kitchen with a bathroom. Plenty of parking if you have a car.

Sapphire Beach in January! Great little getaway spot! We are enjoying the beautiful views and quaint little island. Driving on the left side of the road was a little different, but not too difficult! We’ve seen a gorgeous rainbow over St. Juan, and are looking forward to exploring St. Thomas and having fun watching our friends get married tomorrow!
