The campsites are nicely sized and protected behind big rock formations. Absolutely beautiful! It was a bit windy in the park when we visited and our site was not really setup for a small trailer, more for a tent, but it was still very enjoyable.

Indian Cove Campground is a hidden gem of a scenic camping area located in the Southern California Desert area of Joshua Tree National Park AND 29 Palms California. You drive southwest off of 29 Palms Highway approximately 5 miles, passed the Indian Cove Ranger Station, onto the geologic boulder valley of Indian Cove. They have secluded, peaceful campsites that offer its visitors a terrific desert camping experience! They have fire rings, benches, pit toilets and wide open campsites! You can ride your mountain bike here or "ten toe" around the dirt roads or trails nearby. At nite being a designated "Dark Sky Park" the Indian Cove skys come alive with its "billion and one" star scape! This is a popular campground that requires advance reservations. Unfortunately, all camping in Joshua Tree NP is forbidden during the time of our visit, so we were limited to day use and a picnic. Fortunately, Indian Cove has more to offer than just camping. At the end of the campground area is a delightful and well marked Nature Trail. If you are a scrambler, I understand that there is the opportunity to get to spots for a great sunset view. You'll also have the opportunity to spot some climbers as was the case during our visit.

The campground is expansive and nestled between large boulder fields so it is extremely quiet and there is interesting scenery right in your campsite. Some campers are rock climbing, others are hiking and many are relaxing at their sites. There is a nice nature trail and you are within steps of scrambling up large boulders. There is no running water or electricity but the pit toilets are clean and well maintained. I suggest bringing binoculars as there are lots of interesting rock formations, cactus, wildlife and other scenery to enjoy. After a full day of exploring, relax in your campsite and enjoy the unbelievable night sky views. Plan your trip when the moon is absent to see the Milky Way in its full splendor.

So I am headed back here again this month and can't wait! Indian Cove advantages, here are 10 for starters; 1. Close to town, 2. Ranger Station at entrance and patrols, 3. Ranger station has free water filling station, 4. NO $30 PER VEHICLE EXTRA ENTRANCE FEE, 5. Plenty of large rocks to climb and see, 6. Camp site is reservable, has table, grill, and fire pit, 7. Professional and Novice Rock Climbing areas 8. Pets allowed at campsite, 9. Clear sky and stare view at night, 10.Highly recommend, maybe I should not give it such a great review to keep it from filling up (lol) j.k., you will absolutely love it!

Because this campground is located east of the major portions of JTree, sunset comes earlier than you might expect. For the most part, the spaces are well sized with your camping neighbors not too close. Also, since it is outside of the main park, it might be easier to find a spot during busy seasons. Do check with the National Park reservations site, recreation.gov to confirm availability during high season to reserve your spot. The toilets are clean and not too bad for open pit and there is a handy market just down the road from the campsite for groceries, sodas, firewood and beer. It's a short drive back into the park for which the more popular sites may be fully booked.

Tucked away from the crowds this campground is absolutely amazing. You are nestled among giant boulders and rock faces with desert views around the campground. There wasn't many people here when we visited in early March, which just added to the peace and solitude. Sure it's tucked out of the way, but that was my whole reason for being here, to experience the wilderness and to sit out at night with a cold beer and feel so relaxed and contented, it's so special. I wanna go back !!

We stayed 2 nights at the Indian Cove Campground. These sites were immaculate when we reached the site. It is nice that is has it's own entrance and is close to town. Our kids loved that the sites back up to boulders that were easily scaled and honestly could have entertained themselves the whole weekend. The sites are large with adequate parking. Only downside is its a dry site with only pit toilets. The ranger station does have a water spigot which is helpful. The town of Twenty Nine Palms is very close should you forget anything. We hiked Rattlesnake Canyon, the Nature Trail, and earned Junior Ranger Badges. It was a fabulous weekend exploring a place so close to home but one we hadn't been to.

The wild flowers were in full bloom and the campground was far from full. Arrived a bit late in the day but plenty of time to set up camp. Our neighbors arrived after dark and with three kids, one a baby set up their tent and had a fire and dinner. Amazing actually. it is really beautiful here full of rounded boulders the park is known for. A family was rock climbing nearby and all in all a very nice evening. The visitor center was jammed but we did not need to go there other than to get directions. It is still a premier national park despite the vandalism during the government shut down earlier in the year. The Joshua Trees still dominate the view in all directions.

This past week-end we had the opportunity to stay 3 days 2 nights with 3 other couples. The rocks/flowers/sights are incrediable to see and you wonder how this all came to be. We had 2 different camp spots which both were very seculded and private. Although there were other people in the campground - no one could hear any type of noise/disturbance so it is very peaceful. My only complaint is that we left as it started to get dark in our 1976 van. Not sure which road to take (they all look the same) and no exit signs, camp site #'s - it was needless to say very difficult to find our way out of the campground - After 2 hours of constantly going down wrong roads we were both very concerned would we ever get out - would we have to park our van and just spend the night - where were the Park Rangers if any?? This to me is totally unacceptable with the state park not having any type of roadway signs/exit sign showing people where to go. Other than that after 2 hours we finally found an asphalt roadway - we really enjoyed the beauty of the campground. I'm concerned what the reason is that not more signage isn't put up to help others who probably got lost as we did. also why isn't there some type of security riding thru the camp ground in case of emergency. There is also no cell phone service due to the amount of rocks that surround you…
