Disappointing room - very small even though we booked a king size room. Room was incorrectly prepared - no z bed for child & no space to put it in. Steep stairs - could really do with a handrail on the wall. TV- badly placed so u can't see from the bed - needs to be on a swivel bracket.... More

Stayed last night, as away on business. All the hotels my company normally use were fully booked so I found the Lion Hotel on Laterooms.com. Called the Lion direct, and they matched the rate. Arrived and was showed promptly to my room, clean, well appointed and tastefully decorated. The kettle in my room was a bit dusty and needed a... More

The hotel is in a very sweet-looking old village near a canal and it's conveniently not far from the M6, so we thought it would make a good halfway stop-off on our way north. It seems to be run by nice, but very young, inexperienced staff. Our actual room was fine - clean and light - but suffered from two... More

I recently booked a table for Sunday lunch for a group of friends to celebrate a birthday. Five days before the event I received a telephone call to cancel my booking as some incompetent member of staff had overbooked and they had no room. An apology was not forthcoming and they didn't seem bothered that they had caused us so... More

We stayed here for one night last week whilst in the area. The exceptionally clean hotel has been beautifully remodelled recently from its previous role as the Courthouse. Very friendly staff who really looked after us. We had a drink on arrival before checking in and there is a good choice of local beers which pleased my husband. The potato... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Lion Hotel, built in the 18th century, was originally two establishments, namely The Giffard Arms and The Red Lion. They continued to have two different proprietors until 1850, when The Giffard Arms and The Red Lion was under a single proprietor and was presumably combined into one establishment. The name seems to have been shortened to The Lion by 1867.It was in The Red Lion that the Hon. John Byng was "put into a white-washed room, and got a miserable, neither hot - nor cold dinner" in 1792.The Giffard Arms was used as a magistrates court and the Magistrates and prisoners would enter by the now blocked off door on the far right of the building. In 1870 and for many years there were many different licensees for The Lion, including E. Bagnall and A. Bourne, and in 1937 the licensee was a Mrs Anne Ball. The combined premises subsequently had a spell as a "posh" Three Star Hotel (AA & RAC).A magnificent staircase was removed from the interior of The Giffard Arms in 1970.At present, The Lion Hotel is a Grade 11 listed building. ... more   less
