Next time you're in Ecuador and looking for an extraordinary experience, try the Madre Tierra Resort and Spa in Vilcabamba less than an hour south of Loja, owned and operated by husband and wife team Peter and Gail for the last several years. It offers glitter without the pretense. If you go there by cab from Loja, most will know... More

The knockout thing about Madre Tierra is the friendly competency of the staff. It's all about you, the guest. Their grounds are magical as are the views. The restaurant cooks up great food, using veggies from their own organic garden. (and seemingly without added salt - a rare thing in Ecuador!) The rooms are comfortable and wildly free form and... Madre Tierra is a wonderful, homey, comfortable, and lush resort offering spacious rooms, delicious food, and friendly staff. The service (housekeeping, food/drink, reception, spa) was nothing short of exceptional. Even better, it was all very personal. Visiting Madre Tierra is more like visiting a home away from home than anything else. Everyone acts as if they have known each other... More

I loved this place. The room was great. They have a spa, which was nice. The place is organized, has great margaritas, and the food is good. Only one small complaint and that is a little noise from my side of the rooms from the road. I will go back and I may get the same room again, so it could... More

Our family recently stayed at this wonderful resort. We really enjoyed the unique spa treatments, the amazing food, the friendly and helpful staff, and the spectacular surrounding scenery. Being in the health and wellness business I was very pleased to see their focus on organic, natural and eco friendly approaches to their offerings. The family that owns and operates the... More

A unique hotel with amazing views and friendly staff. They made this visit to Vilcabamba a delight. Each room features novel stone work in bathrooms. If there was one drawback, and I found this in most South American hotels, they fail to provide tea and coffee making equipment. Just a little criticism but easy enough to live without.

If you are looking for peace and a good nights sleep don't bother here. Very noisy with Roosters nearby crowing all night also there was a rat on my roof who came out at night just loud enough to hear him all night. Breakfast is free but if you ask for a slightly larger bowl of fruit they charge you... More

This is going to be a long response. Get your favorite beverage and relax. One of the most challenging tasks for me is responding to negative reviews when there are two sides to the story. The goal is to honor the reviewer and let the readers know more about the situation and what they can expect if they vacation with... More

I spent ten days at Madre Tierra in March, 2013. I had seen pictures on the website which was already enticing but the experience of actually staying there was even more magical. The owners Gail and Peter and all their wonderful staff make you feel so comfortable as if you were a guest in their home. I was visiting by... More

The Madre Tierra is a beautiful property with very hospitable and engaging managers and staff. We spent 4 days here and the experience could not have been better. The rooms are beautiful and uniquely constructed with some exceptionally artistic touches including creative rock and tile work. The food prepared at the hotel is cheap and exceptionally healthy. I especially appreciated... More
