Madrid's trendy Malasaña neighborhood is full of great local restaurants. Check out my favorite spots to enjoy the neighborhood as the locals do.

Lara V's City Tips

  • While the restaurants and pubs in many areas of Madrid have formal dress codes, Malasaña is more about casual style. T-shirts and sneakers are the perfect style for this 'hood.
  • The easiest way to reach Malasaña is to take the Metro to Tribunal or Noviciado Station. Once you're here, the day can be spent walking around.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, as you're likely to do a lot of walking.
  • Tipping is not required in Spain, but if the service deserves it, it is nice to leave something.
  • As Spanish people tend to have lunch later than those in other countries, the lunch rush happens between 2:30 and 3 p.m. For a leisurely lunch, dine before or after this time.
  • Madrid is a very safe city, but remember to mind your belongings, especially in city center areas.
  • Drinking alcohol in public spaces is forbidden, so to enjoy the outdoors over a drink, find a pleasant pub with a terrace.

No, Madrid is not only about tapas. Home Burguer Bar is the place to go when you fancy a good burger. The atmosphere is casual but cool, and the menu features an array of creative gourmet burgers, plus sandwiches and vegetarian options. Health nuts will appreciate that the meat is all organic too.

Cheery and laid-back, Lolina Vintage Cafe has a fun, retro vibe, with colorful decor and plenty of inviting chairs and sofas. Its varied menu includes light bites like smoothies and salads, as well as panini, hot dogs, and some delicious desserts.

    • Try Rosita beer, a craft beer from Tarragona that is not very easy to find in Madrid.
    • The tosta of sobrasada (toast with brie and honey) is addictive.
    • If you fancy cocktail, the one to order is Lolina's own take the gin and tonic: "Gin and Tonic Premium Helado."

    Lara V Says:

Stylish Maricastaña has a vintage-chic look, with soft lighting and communal tables. Jazz plays in the background while diners enjoy delicious homemade foods. The only problem is deciding what to order: the breakfast menu offers delicious options, but the lunch menu, with items like tuna with raspberry, is also hard to resist. Whatever you do, save room for dessert - the cakes are amazing!

If you love nightlife and don't mind crowds, this is the place to be. A longtime favorite on Madrid's nightlife scene, La Via Laceta is an epic experience. The ceiling is lined with festival posters, the music selection ranges from pop to rockabilly, and the crowd is lively, fun, and friendly - in short, it's a classic place to end the best nights out!

For a rather small club, this eclectic spot offers a little something for everyone, from hopping dance floor to intimate tables to buzzing bar. And just as different rooms offer different vibes, every night is something new as well. You might visit during an exhibition by a local artist, hear a set from one of Madrid's best DJs or catch live jazz or Brazilian samba. Whatever is happening, it's sure to be a memorable night.

This charming spot is always one of my top picks when foodie friends are visiting. Don't expect anything posh or trendy here. El Palentino is a classic Spanish bar, with a homey vibe and a menu of local favorites, including traditional tapas and bocadillos (sandwiches). It's also popular for its friendly owners and cheap prices.

If you're looking for a truly local experience, look no further than Plaza del Dos de Mayo. Commemorating the battle between Spanish soldiers and Napoleon's invading army (on May 2, 1808), the plaza has become the epicenter of Malasaña nightlife: home to lovely outdoor terraces, a great atmosphere, and many great food and drink options.
