Where to eat in Union Square (that won't break the bank)

5 Jun 2009  Foodie on a budget? That's me.

Normally I'd say to head elsewhere when in search of good eats, but sometimes that's impossible. These restaurants are more than decent, and all within walking distance of Union Square.

In the new Mint Plaza (try Blue Bottle Coffee nearby, it's the best), solid choice for French cuisine close to Union Square. Check out their website for prix fixe menus, happy hour menu, etc.

    Plouf, San Francisco, California

Belden Lane is an atmospheric place for dinner- nice outdoor seating (with heat lamps!) and good restaurants. My favorite of the bunch is Plouf- mostly for the mussels, which you can order in a variety of ways. Appetizers are good too, though entrees are a bit overpriced. I can easily make a meal out of mussels, apps, and dessert.

  • 3. Gitane
    Gitane, San Francisco, California

Atmopsheric restaurant, great for dates or a girls night. Extensive drinks list and good mediterranean food. www.gitanerestaurant.com

  • 4. Scala's Bistro
    Scala's Bistro, San Francisco, California

In the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. Solidly good food- not amazing, but if you really need to be in Union Square, this place is a good choice.

  • 5. Ryoko Restaurant & Bar
Ryoko Restaurant & Bar, San Francisco, California

Sushi and izakaya (cooked) dishes, just a block from Union Square. Surprisingly good sushi, and open really late.

  • 6. Fish & Farm
Fish & Farm, San Francisco, California

Good choice for seafood- also nice that they use locally grown ingredients.

  • 7. Katana-ya
    Katana-ya, San Francisco, California

$10 gets you a bowl of ramen noodles- a good budget choice for lunch or dinner.

  • 8. Lahore Karahi
    Lahore Karahi, San Francisco, California

Much better than any other Indian/Pakistani restaurants directly in/near Union Square. This is in the Tenderloin, but it's not too far of a walk (or better yet, cab ride) from Union Square. Good tandoori, naan, and great service.

  • 9. Dottie's True Blue Cafe
Dottie's True Blue Cafe, San Francisco, California

Great choice for a full breakfast or brunch. There's always a line, so be prepared to wait.
