here is a list of the amazing places i found as i traveled myself through hongkong. i am a bit picky, so this list shows what i really liked!
the day time concierge raymond and the head bellboy/cab getter person were super friendly and nice. def. upgrade to the nikko floor for free break. newspaper, and happy hour. plus a great place to stop in all day for a soda or beer. the location in east tsim sha tsui was a nice break from the hecticness. i would stay here again.
cheap souv. for sale in the terminal. the best $2.2 hkd you can spend. splendid views!
cheap, cheap is what is for sale. good stuff though. got a nice painting for $3usd. nice prints for $1usd. you can haggle, but when a nice print is $1 i see little reason too.
really neat to see the ruinas de sao paulo. the remains of the forteleza are neat, and the largo de senado or cental square. they say it is a foodie paradise, but all i found were huge slabs of beef jerky like beef for sale (which looked quite yum but my belly was scared),beef "gut" soup , and random animal parts. i think you have to go to one of the connected islands to get the good stuff.
def. check out one harbour road restaurant and request a harbour view seat. donald is the head of reservations and super friendly. the beef is awesome!
def. check out spoon, alain ducasse restaurant there. very good with an incredible view service was 5 star all the way!!! not asian food. but what a view.
l16/zen is the main restaurant you see there, food is really not that good. if you can, save your appetite for a bit early or later. drinks are way over priced as well. but, thats what comes with the view! the same pictures on sale on the peak for $26 usd are $3 in the markets--fyi....
def. go to china bear for a beer and snacks or lunch. fun british crowd and amazing views!!! right next to ferry terminal! so neat seeing the big budda!! lots of steps though! if you are craving "american" chinese food, this is the place, the satay and spring rolls were V good. service was very nice as well!
lot of steps to get down, but super neat to see on the way up! lots of really fun shops. steps all over the place in the shops so beware if you are a klutz (like me). i tripped in more than my fare share of places :)
check out hong kong brewery for splendid brews and cool glasses to take home for cheap. the rickshaw and hong kong brews were super!
kyoto joes for japanese food was quite good as welll!
check out splendid china and the china folk culture villages--right next to one another. i went as part of a tour with china travel services. part of a tour i booked in kowloon. later we went to the lo wu commercial district. neat too see if you are into fakes, but too overwhelming for me. beware, next to the booking service in kowloon is another service that is i guess super cheap, but tries to trick westerners into booking their service. if they try taking you to the 4th floor i/o the 1st tell them you want out! best to go with a recommended agency! the entrances are confusing!
also, i dont think they have seen a bunch of light skinned westerners in shenzhen. i have light hair, and little girls followed me all day and requested lots of pics with me (i am sure their parents will be wondering who i am on the photos). lots of kids pointing and adults waiving, but its all meant well!
very nice temple to see. highly recommend. a bit off the tourist track as i was the only western person there.
i meant the shanghai street in hong kong--wild. lots of different food for sale. if you want snake soup--you are in luck!
all the pretty people are here. stop in for an ibiza drink with lychee liquor. quite good. view is awesome, but you can get the view from most other hotels. stop in for the people watching.
most chinese part of hong kong. lots of stuff to see. also, free tai chi courses and junk tours available throught the hk travel board. located in the ferry terminal. for tai chi just show up. junk needs to be booked. they have all kind of free classes for tourists to take. tai chi and the boat ride were quite fun. you can take tai chi 4 days a week--as they recommended to me since i was not that good :)
super cool place to shop and have great restaurants. same with kimberly road. on kimberly road check out nomads. they have a noodle bar where you pick the noodles, all the add ons and your sauce and they make it for you. heaven on earth at 6 knutsford terrace had terrific chinese food. i wish i had gone to both of these places twice!
check out woodlands international at 61 mody road. decor is nothing to shout about, but the vegetarian indian food is.
