I haven't been to monteverde cloud forest but have been told by numerous people that it is very crowded. The cloud forest itself is beautiful and very atmospheric with the mist/cloud covering. ..."Don't expect to see any animals though, and if you do see one it will be a bonus - we saw a deer and some insects. I wouldn't say you need a guide, we did it on our own. The one thing I was a little disappointed with was I thought they could have had leaflets or a poster or two in the entrance bit describing and giving more information about cloud forests, but I guess that's what you get a guide for. It's a $4 return minibus to Santa Elena which picks you up from your accommodation. There are certain times it picks you up and returns from the park. There are only a limited number of people allowed in each day which makes for a quiet atmosphere and a feeling of really being close to nature as it is not highly developed for tourists. The guide had a telescope which allowed us to see things up close and also showed us how to take photos through it using it as a zoom lens. We got some great pictures this way. There is a hummingbird area that is not to be missed. I have never seen so many and such a variety of them in one location. I can't say enough about our guide. Not only did he seem to know a lot about the area, he seemed very excited to share it with us. You could tell he liked his job and that made it even more special for our group.   "My husband and I had a great time ziplining! It was definitely a one-of-a-kind experience. The Superman lines were long, which was frightening to me at first, because you can look straight down (which is a long way down!), but it turned out to be exhilarating after a few seconds. The tarzan swing..." was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It really felt like a freefall the first few seconds. I don't have any desire to do that again, but I'm glad I did it once. Be ready for a hike in between the regular ziplining and the Superman lines. The staff was helpful, but we didn't spend too much time talking to them b/c we were in the beginning of the group.
