"We stayed in a private rental just down the street from the Kapoho Tide Pools, but didn't make it there until the very last day. SO glad we did. It was the most amazing snorkeling. We saw so many fish and turtles. Every once and a while you would feel the warm water from ocean vents. the tide w..."as pretty strong (for within a tidepool) so I was grateful for my fins. It was nice to be protected in the pools - which are decievingly deep! Make sure you have shoes of some sort to get out across the rocks and find a good entry point. We went in for what felt like moments and and by the time we made it around and go back to where we started (or close to it) we'd be in for 2 hours! If we had known how amazing it was earlier in the week, we definitly would have gone every day. Such a gem. Do not miss it if you are in the area. One of my favourite Big Island experiences by far.

"Seeing the live lava flowing right in front of you is one of the highlights. My husband literally set his boot on fire. (he was that close) We were gonna take a helicopter tour to see the live lava but since we are Eco-friendly traveler, we decided against it. Good decision! We not only supporting t..."he locals but the hike was good for us, health wise.
We went on May 04 and took the 5 o'clock tour. Our guide was nice, but could have done better. There were six of us in the group, some were fit and some weren't. Our guide's pace was a little too fast for the couple that weren't fit, one of them is not wearing a proper shoes for that kind of terrain. We stopped few times to wait for them. On the way back one of them sustained a bloody knee.
We were allowed to do our own things when we got there. No supervision. Not a good safety practice. The tour is very laid back, do as you please.
Two groups merged at the end, one guide took the lead, the other took the rear end, couple of injurie...

"The lava tour from Kalapana cultural tours was absolutely fantastic. Our guide walked us out over the lava fields, showing us cool landmarks stuck in the lava from previous flows. As we approached the lava, he went to a high point and found the lava surface flow. He guided us to the flow and allowed..." us to appreciate the lava from a very close but safe (3 ft/1 m) distance. He also showed us the lava flowing into they ocean, which made for some awesome pictures in the twilight. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in seeing the bare earth formed.
