The history of Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum began in June 1975 when the legendary aircraft carrier USS Yorktown entered Charleston Harbor. A few months later, the USS Yorktown was dedicated as the first ship of the Naval & Maritime Museum on the 200th birthday of the United States Navy. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum was officially opened to the public on January 3, 1976.Today the museum consists of USS Yorktown (CV-10), USS Clamagore (SS-343), the Medal of Honor Museum, 25 aircraft from WW II to present and a Vietnam Support Base. Hopefully in the near future, USS Laffey (DD-724) will return to a berth at Patriots Point

Don't miss the boat! Water Taxis make hourly trips across the harbor to downtown Charleston starting at 9am. Leave the car in Mt Pleasant at the Charleston Harbor Resort at Patriots Point and avoid the parking hassle. $10 all day pass allows you to come and go when you please. Water Taxis land at the Charleston Maritime Center next to the Aquarium Wharf. The water taxis make a scenic 4 mile loop around Charleston Harbor checking out dolphins on the way. Great for kids and grown-ups who just want to get on the water.

Called the crown jewel of Mount Pleasant, Memorial Waterfront Park offers more than just your average park. Located under the grand entryway to the town, at the base of the Ravenel Bridge, this park has plenty of lawn for enjoying family picnics, a nautical-themed playground modeled after the bridge that provides shade and the boats that pass by in the harbor, and soft-serve ice cream from the River Watch Cafe. The cafe offers beautiful views of Charleston Harbor and a 1,250-foot-long pier where you can sit and swing a while. Memorial Waterfront Park is also home to the Sweetgrass Cultual Arts Pavilion, War Memorial and Visitor Center.

"Well worth a day but get there early to include the Ft. Sumpter tour. Have lunch in the CPO dining room on the aircraft carrier. So much history and so much to see...like drinking from a firehose! The submarine is not to be missed also but if you are claustrophobic you may want to start slow. So muc..."h to be proud of those folks that served on those ships.

"We stopped by and spent a half hour combing through the merchandise. They offer a good mix of housewares, clothing and the like and went far beyond the standard lowcountry gift shop stuff. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. Definitely worth stopping by."
"This was the only plantation we visited and learned so much about the history of the site and the area. The home tour, bus tour of the grounds and the story telling presentation are not to be missed. Amazing old oak trees and grounds. "
