"We rode Boston to Cumberland in three days, coming off the trail at night instead of camping. We've spent a lot of time on the C&O, but this was our first visit to the GAP. We were delighted by the scenery, though riding in the rain and snow on a timetable, we didn't stop for photos as often as we..."'d have liked. The trail is very well maintained, with no overgrowth or potholes.
The surface, crushed limestone, makes for a very comfortable ride - however when wet it got very soft and had a tendency to suck the tires in. We spent a day absolutely crawling through a surface that felt like wet concrete. The other downside to the limestone is that when it gets all over the bike, the wet concrete dries and scrubbing it off later is a chore. It still beat plowing through soft mud on the C&O.
The camping areas, though we didn't stay overnight, all seemed clean and well thought out, with three sided shelters and water pumps. We'd definitely camp out on another trip.

"We stopped here to learn a bit about Cumberland. It was small but very informative. It has a bit of everything for every age. I actually found a display that helped me understand the division of counties through the 1800's . Be sure to go into the grand ballroom! It was well laid out and the vol..."unteer was very knowledgeable would answer questions even though it is a self guided museum. It was sad in some respects to travel through time and see the decline of a beautiful little city. There is no admission fee but there is a free will offering donation box. The museum is on the second floor of the building and has steps and an elevator for access.
Suggest you follow up with walking some of the city area and then driving through the old neighborhoods on the hill near the court house. Beautiful views and amazing architecture .

"We spent a delightful morning hour in "The Book Center" in historic Cumberland, MD before walking to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad on its opening day. Not only a place to browse the area's largest local & regional history selection, the children's book/toy section, the used books area, postc..."ards/souvenirs & more are all wonderful. Convenient hours (8AM - 6PM M-F / 9 - 5 Sat. / 10 - 4 Sun) enabled an hour to pass pleasantly before an easy walk to the historic railway station. The Book Center's owner encourages pet adoption with his fostering kittens at the store until they find good homes. Support local bookshops & enjoy this treasure of a store!
