This Italianate-style brick house, with original furnishings, looks very much as it did in 1865 when a group of townspeople presented it as a gift to Ulysses S. Grant on his victorious return from the Civil War.

It's worth the climb up the steep stairway to see what's inside this lovely Italianate home built in 1858: an actual lead mine, Civil War memorabilia, items honoring Ulysses S. Grant (including an original painting depicting Robert E. Lee's surrender to Grant), plus other historical articles from Galena and Jo Daviess County.

The green drapes from "Gone with the Wind" are one of the many interesting items on display at this 22-room Italianate-style home. Built in 1857, the mansion now exhibits period furnishings and also includes items from the estate of flamboyant entertainer Liberace.

"We always like to take tours and get the lay of the land when we travel. The tour was very informative, and we learned some interesting things. Jimmy, our tour guide, was hilarious! We really enjoyed it."
"There are not enough good things that can be said about David and restoration spirit. I started seeing him for migraines over a year ago, and it was the best decision of my life. I see him regularly now for upkeep on my migraines, stress relief, and a nice relaxing massage. The atmosphere is fant..."astic and David makes you feel comfortable the whole time. I would and have recommended him to everyone I know. Also, check out his amazing rock garden when you enter!

"Tired to winter in Wisconsin we headed south to Illinois for a brief visit in a town that friends had recommended to us. After winding along a pretty secondary road into the city we found ourselves right in front of the museum and decided to pay a visit while the weather outside was a bit on the ra..."iny side. The museum was "just right" with enough to see without feeling museum fatigue. Particularly enjoyable was the introductory visit with General and Mrs.Grant (in a hologram), after which we viewed the various displays on his life in Galena (which was actually rather brief) and accounts of the other nine Civil War generals. A great beginning to a fun little trip.
