"On a recent visit to Cortez, we drove the 10 miles or so up to Dolores to take in the Anasazi Heritage Center. It is an amazing museum with incredible artifacts and friendly, helpful staff. They also have one of the best special photography exhibits that I can recall. It captures photos detailing th..."e astronomical connection between solstice and equinox events and the location of specific sites at several ruins in the area including Hovenweep and Mesa Verde, among others. It's definitely worth a short side trip to see this amazing collection.

"found this museum by accident and it turned out to be a great adventure. It opens at 9 am and we were a little early but walked up to the top of the hill to see the ruins. then we toured the musuem and enjoyed all of it. Great learning opportunity for adults and kids. If you are in the area you shou..."ldn't miss this.

"This is an excellent museum, giving a good overview of the Ancestral Puebloans of the Four Corners region -- well worth the drive from Cortez or Mesa Verde National Park. The museum has a large room devoted to interactive activities, with something appealing for children of all ages. Two films are..." shown when requested; both were interesting and informative. After you've seen the museum, take the walk up the hill to see the ruin and views of the region.
The museum has attractive picnic spots, so if you bring your lunch on a nice day you could happily spend a half-day here.
