THE MUSEUM It is designed to challenge conventional views of museum design. It draws on the work of Andreas Huyssen who has written extensively on the concept of memory and history. Visitors are not treated as consumers but active participants. The conventions of representing history as a single story are challenged through the design of the museum spaces. The past is represented as a set of memories that are disconnected yet bound together by themes.

"We only had one day in which to show friends the history of Port Elizabeth, do a township tour and go around Addo. I arranged everything with Alan beforehand and agreed on an affordable price. When we started the tour, some of our French guests were struggling to understand. It wasn't Alan's fault, ..."one of them had a VERY basic understanding of English. Clearly an oversight on my part as the host. They were quite keen to see an elephant as they hadn't managed to see any on their safari. This was promptly arranged by Alan, who called his colleague Angelika. She met us to pick up our French friends and took them straight to Addo. No mess, no fuss.
All in all, everyone got to see what they wanted, everyone was happy. For me, this was all I could ask for. He then booked us a table at the Phoenix Hotel for dinner. Great suggestion!
Good old-fashioned food, great steaks, sawdust on the floor, 50s decor, jukebox and did I mention the steak? One of the best steaks I had in South Africa. ...
