This world heritage site was the home of Tokugawa leyasu, one of the most powerful men in Japan. The castle was built as a residence and not for defense purposes. However, to protect the shogun from enemies, special creaky floorboards were installed to warn of anyone approaching.

"The Gion District is probably the most famous location for spotting Geisha’s walking along in full costume going to and from visits with customers. The district itself is a busy combination of cars, shops and tourist. Along the famous Hanami-Koji drive/area it is even difficult at times to walk al..."ong the avenue due to the congestion caused by cars and tourists. It’s a fantastic place to watch people who are watching other people! The street is lined with small shops and restaurants adorned with interesting lanterns and other Japanese motifs. One of the best times to view the Hanami-Koji is at night when the lights make for a spectacular site. Along the Hanami-Koji is the entrance to “Gion Corner”, where according to its website: “you can take in seven kinds of performing arts, most notably kyo-mai dance performed by maiko dancers. Here you can see Japans traditional performing arts in ‘digest’ form all on one stage.”
This is the best location to spot a Maiko (or apprentice Ge...

"This Shrine, also known as the Gion Shrine is probably the most popular of the shrines in Kyoto. It is right along one of the busiest streets in Kyoto right next to the Gion district. The Shrine gate is very pretty and offers a nice view of Kyoto and especially the Gion district once you enter and..." turn around to look outside.
When you are inside the gates the area offers many quiet and tranquil spots to sit and meditate or just people watch. It’s a very nice place to escape the hectic and chaotic Geon district. I would recommend a visit if you are in the area.

"This site contains two very large temples, the Nishi and Higashi temples. The Nishi Temple is easy to locate and interesting to visit. (but make sure you take off your shoes!). The Higashi Temple is a short distance away and houses a large and imposing Temple (the largest wooden structure in Kyot..."o). When we visited the Higashi Temple was being renovated and we were not able to go inside. But the renovations were to have been completed by the end of 2012.
The Honganjhi Temples and gardens are smack in the middle of Kyoto just past the Kyoto Tower. Train travelers who make a stop at Kyoto Station can reach the temple by just walking a couple of blocks. We found the grounds nice, but they are not ordained with the typical lush and manicured gardens you will often find in Japan. However, there is a nice water feature (a moat) and shrub plantings along the outside of the temple grounds wall. A visit to the Honganjhi offers a nice respite from the very hectic Kyoto streets and side...
