- Lilianda_50Tulcea, Romania23 contributionsThe Saon Monastery is at a distance of 11 kilometers in the direction of Niculiţel, from Tulcea, it is a very beautiful monastery with three silver domes ... It has a lake (L.Telincea, near L. Rotundu, near the Danube ). It is well-kept, owns farm farms, wine production facilities, wine warehouse, fruit orchards, farm, and also offers very decent accommodation. Anyway, it's worth visiting!Written 3 July 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- rhm23901Naples, FL91 contributionsI was the only visitor during the hour and a half that I spent in the museum, and I did a solo tour, not being able to read Romanian (though familiar with other Romance languages). Still, the clothing and other material objects were understood based on physical context, and the ethnographic maps elucidated the great cultural/ethnic diversity in the Delta Danube. Well worth a visit.Written 17 September 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Tiberiu_BaranyiTimisoara, Romania12,986 contributionsThe area of Dobrogea where Tulcea is located today is very reach in history - stating from the Stone Age it was inhabited by various people ... tribes of Thracians, Gheti, and Dacians, Scythians from this region waged wars with king Darius the great Persian King - he made an expedition north to these lands around 500 B.C. - Greek colonies were established in this region in the VIIIth century B.C. so he had a good reason for the northern detour.
Celts had a citadel in todays Tulcea - Aegyssus was its name ... pity our Romanian history books don't mention much about this tumultuous past of this region (we learn in school : or we learned , that the Gheti and Dacians lived here for centuries , around 84-87 A.D. the Romans attacked the Dacian tribes north of the Danube ... met their bloody end and returned in 101 under the command of king Traian - and eventually forced the Dacian kingdom into submission in 106 , colonized Dacia and stayed until about 273 A.D when they retreaded south of the Danube due to the increasing threats and raids of the migratory tribes abandoning Dacia after more than 150 years of rule ... in a nutshell this is what I learned back in a day - today is obvious that it is a very thin and very tendentious approach to the historical facts ... stull history lesson stops here).
So back to the museum ... it covers all the ages from the stone age to the modern times - there are some very interesting items on display and if you have the time I recommend you visit the place ... it is definitely worth the price of the entry ticket - go and enjoy the history lesson , it is indeed captivating!Written 22 August 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - Tiberiu_BaranyiTimisoara, Romania12,986 contributionsIn the courtyard of the Archeology and History museum of Tulcea , on a small hill overlooking the city , you shall find the Monument of Independence - it was raised to commemorate those fallen in the war for of 1877-1878 (war that was waged against the Ottomans who were occupying the region of Dobrogea in that period).
Made of marble, it consists of 3 pieces - 1 obelisk in the middle flanked by to bronze statues - one representing an infantry man form the period of the Independence war, with the riffle on his shoulder and a horn in his hand (a wake-up call to arms? ...maybe) and the royal vulture (symbol of the house of Hohenzollern, the family of the King Charles I of Romania who has been named King of Romania in 1878).
Overall and interesting landmark , for those who are into history, a very good spot for taking some beautiful pictures of Tulcea from a nice vantage point - mind the opening hours, since it is in the courtyard of the museum the courtyard is not open 24/7 - it does close around 22-23:00 in the evening , reopening in the next morning.Written 22 August 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Natasha JBucharest, Romania73 contributionsThis was an unexpected gem that we stopped on our last morning in Tulcea because I am a lover of both history and art. The woman we spoke to was very knowledgeable about the history of the house as well as the art on display on both levels.
The Avramide family were wealthy businessmen who lost everything when Communism took over and the family home was later turned into a museum to celebrate art and culture. There was some really great art on display and even a small section where local high school art works were on display.
The art by Eugeniu Barău was truly incredible and I had never heard of him before but the work was powerful, vibrant and political.

I dont know enough about the iconography to know how special it is but it was a cool, quiet place to sit and contemplate.Written 11 June 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
