"My wife and I (in our late 40s) dropped in to the museum late on a Saturday afternoon. It was $5 per adult, which we both thought was well worth it. The team of volunteers running the museum have done an excellent job pulling together material from the town's interesting history. The links to busine..."sses still running, like the foundry, and the quality of the exhibits lifted the museum above the average for small town museums. The volunteer on duty kindly put on a wind-up gramophone for us - it's not often these days that you get to see one in action.

"Low key, understated and great. The self guided tour around mining equipment was OK. I enjoyed the documentary movie of Waihi gold mining around 1950. The excitement level went up when we went put on hard hats and went through part of the mine. Seeing and hearing the stamper battery operating was th..."e highlight - thank goodness for the ear muffs that they provided.
Interesting to learn how important mercury was in mopping up the gold and silver from the crushed ore, but frightful to see how casually it was handled - must have been some mad miners.
Favourite quote "Kids, follow the dog around the corner and out of the mine"!

I am so glad I went there! I did not find the entry fee of $13 too expensive when compared witht he prices at other amenitie..."s. Yes, the towels were $8, but you get refunded $4 of that when you take them back. There was a snack bar, and a small cafe (closed when I went there). The change rooms were clean and spacious and there are outside, undercover cublices where you can stash your gear and keep an eye on it while bathing. The pool itself is perfect; it is huge, 37 degrees and with good wide steps to enter and sit on. OK the paint is peeling a bit but the atmosphere is great. At one end in a raised alcove is the bubbling 42 degree adults-only spa pool, which was too hot for me for more than 10 minutes (there is a warning sign to say 20 minutes max. anyway) I guess my only criticism would be that you can't t...
