"It is less than a year since the Isle of Wight Council handed over this garden to an educational trust because they could no longer afford to subsidise it. That is why there has to be an entrance fee. The first priority of the Trust has been to create a separate cafe and restaurant.
I have freque..."nted this garden for over twenty years and I love the variety of plantings here, based on geographical areas and climate zones. This is possible because the Undercliff, where the garden is situated, has its own micro-climate where subtropical plants can survive outdoors in winter.
One of my favourite areas is the Palm Garden, one of the few surviving areas from the time when the garden belonged to the Royal National Hospital for Diseases of the Chest. It has an attractive circular, formal design with decorative vases on plinths and stone benches.

"My husband uses a scooter and this attraction was quite suitable to visit. There are ramps and a designated path to use. You can go anywhere in the 23 acres but sticking to the paths seems sensible. Very peaceful and tranquil and left in parts to nature's own path so can seem a little unkempt. W..."e liked the Tropical house and also the plant greenhouses. The tropical house is good for the disabled too. There is a lift to take disabled users to all the levels of the garden and the staff are very helpful. For the price of £3.50 we thought this was very good value for money. you can spend as little or as long as you want to there and there is a nice selection of plants to buy if thats what you want.

"I agree with most of the other reviews that state you can't spend a whole day here but what you do get when you visit is a warm welcome from friendly staff and some very sweet donkeys, it was so funny to watch them at dinner time as many of them were sharing bowls leaving others being perched upon b..."y birds.
A little gift shop/cafe selling reasonably priced goods including hot drinks and biscuits. You don't get Costa quality coffee but then again you're not paying Costa prices.
You can tell that this place is run for the benefit of the donkeys and not for the money it brings in.
There is no entry fee but we did sponsor a donkey as a family instead.
Well worth an hour out of your day.
