The Sundbaten boat - The world’s oldest public transport service in uninterrupted use. Part of Kristiansund’s cultural heritage and the world’s oldest means of public transport still in use. The first passenger boat service started up in 1876. A new boat - Angvik - was taken into service in 2005, and now service the harbour along with Rapp built in 1958. These small passenger ferries depart from the Piren pier at the foot of Kaibakken hill and run between the four «lands», as the four areas of Kristiansund are called. A roundtrip with the Sundbaten is a great way to experience Kristiansund. Explore different parts of the town with churches, galleries, klipfish museum and a vivid harbour life. Enjoy one of Kristiansunds strongest cultural monument at a very low price. Frequent departures on a daily basis (Sundays only from May-October). A round trip takes approx. 15-20 minutes and it makes a nice sightseeing tour of the harbour and surrounding area. On request the Sundbaten is available for charter, ie for groups. Guided tours, city walks and even more complex arrangements through the whole region is arranged on request.

The road goes from Finnset in Eikesdal through Finnsetlia, featuring several 180 degree hairpin turns, through dramatic nature that might take your breath away. The trip from the fertile Eikesdalen valley, with steep mountains on each side, up to the high mountains with their open and magnificent landscape, is a trip you won’t want to miss. The road takes you in towards the dam at lake Aursjoen (862 m.a.s.) and on down through the Torbudalen and Litldalen valleys to Sunndalsora. The road, originally a construction road from 1947-50, offers many nice nature experiences, and is a good starting point for walks in the Eikesdal mountains and in the Dovre area. If you want an extra challenge, we recommend doing this trip by bicycle. It is approx. 70 km from Eikesdal to Sunndalsora. Remember to bring a bicycle light for the ride through the unique tunnel at Finnsetlia. The road circles inside the mountain! There is a bicycle race each August, a real fitness test and a nice nature experience. The road is a toll road which opens at the beginning of June and stays open until the first snowfall in October/November. It is particularly well suited for motorcycles and SUVs, and of course passenger cars. The road is not recommended for caravans.

From Sukkertoppen (The Sugar Top), you can get a magnificent view with both city, coast and fjord in one! From the centre of alesund you can drive, bicycle or take the local bus to Hessa and eventually park at the primary school, just west of the roundabout in Hessaskaret. Cross the road above the school and follow the Sukkertoppvegen westwards until you find the sign where the path starts, at the right by number 22. The path is gravelled in the beginning, passes a grove and the path is clearly visible (but might be wet and dirty) all the way to the top. You are past half the way when passing the transmitter mast. An unforgettable view expects you!

The first church that was built where alesund Church lies today, was designed by Heinrich Schrimer, and constructed in 1854. This church was damaged in the Town Fire in 1904, even though it was built in brick. The present alesund Church was designed by Sverre Knudsen, and the first stone was laid down by King Haakon the 7th in July 1906. The church was inaugurated in 1909, and was built in concrete, and dressed with marble from Northern More. The frescoes and beautiful stained glass windows were made by Martin Enevold Thomt and Oddvar Straume, and the glass gable windows behind the organ were a gift from the German Kaiser Wilhelm II. The font is made from Italian marble, and the church has got three bells of various sizes. The organ has got 64 tunes, and is one of the largest in Norway. The church is usualy closed on monday and saturday, unless there is a cruise ship in town. Except under wedding ceremonies. Also, the church is closed for tourist before and during funerals.

The Trollkirka, Troll church, is no ordinary church as many may think, but an exciting marble and limestone cave in the mountains with underground rivers and waterfalls. The caves are in the mountains north of the main road between Moen in Fraena and Eide. Park by the RV64 and follow the marked path towards Trollkirka. It takes about an hour and a half to get to the caves. There is a sign where you enter the caves. The main cave is about 70 m long and leads into a waterfall that falls into a white marble bowl. Bring good flashlights/headlamps to each person to have a good view when you are inside the caves. If you continue past the entrances to the caves, you come to the idyllic Trollvatnet lake where you can take a refreshing swim! We recommend hiking boots / waterproof shoes for this trip because of the water inside the caves, in addition to the start of the trail that sometimes can be wet.

By the beautiful harbour in alesund you can find the landmark Holmbua. The warehouse from 1861 escaped the great Town Fire of 1904, and today it holds Aalesunds Museums´ fisheries exhibitions. Take a stroll through the exciting displays and learn more about the town's production of dried cod and other types of fish products. Stop by the laboratory where cod liver oil is produced, the smell alone will set you in the right mood! You will also have the unique possibility to learn more about old trades that are practically extinct today, such as barrel making. In 2010, a new and large exhibition on sea fishing opened - worth a visit!
