This national shrine is the site where three young peasant shepherds spied a "lady brighter than the sun," which was, many believe, the first of six apparitions of the Virgin Mary in this region of Portugal.

"We saw Fátima only as part of a day trip from Lisbon, and we hope and pray to be able to return someday to appreciate this holy place with greater attention and in more detail. The Basilica is beautiful. Seeing the tombs of the children evokes great emotion, and walking the grounds imparts a transce..."ndent peace. The overall feel is one of reverent stillness. While Fátima is more than a bit commercialized on the outskirts of town, being at the sanctuary wipes all that away. The portion of the Berlin Wall on display was a poignant reminder of difficult days in recent world history. Even if you are not particularly devout or even religious at all, it is worth a visit here if you travel to Portugal.

"We saw Fatima as the first part of a day trip from Lisbon a day before the 94th anniversary of the appearance of our Lady to the 3 children (13 May 2013) in which our tour guide, Andre' Marque's, expertly and animatedly recounted the story. Andre' advised that almost a million people would grace Fa..."tima each year during this time. We were only able to enter the modern church on the other side of the Basilica as there was a mass being prepared right in front of the latter but the overall experience was absolutely beautiful. We saw hundreds of people kneel-walking to the Sanctuary and a very long line with people waiting to offer 5-feet tall candles into a burning furnace. You could feel God and his Mother amidst the huge crowd and this has become a definite place we are considering a return trip to. Special thanks to our tour guide, Andre' Marques for taking us as well to the Fatima factory where we were able to purchase lots of souvenirs for family, friends and colleagues at half t...

"Being Jewish ,I could not get over how this spot effects people. The Bassilica was beautful,Last year I was at the Vatican and it was beautiful beyond words but Fatima had an effect on people, Men and women , young and old were crying and walking on their knees. There was a mass going on just as in t..."he Vatican when the pope was giving a Sunday mass but this place really touched the hearts of the people. If you are in Lisbon, it is worth the visit to Fatima. One note everyone was so nice here, the shop keepers, the waiters, and especially the police.
