The Tower of Pisa (180 feet in height) was begun in 1173 and, due to its faulty foundation on unstable soil, leans precariously more than 14 feet out of line, preventing visitors from climbing its 300-plus steps to the top.

"The Leaning Tower of Pisa is mandatory on a trip to Italy. We had a hard time figuring out how to get here from Livorno during our Mediterranean cruise. Some people managed to find shuttles, but we couldn't. We shared a taxi with 5 others for 26 euros each and it was a 30 minute ride. I bought our t..."ickets for the climb to the top online in advance. This is a great idea because the time you want might be sold out the day of. It was about 17 euros. There's a free locker area where you have to leave your purses and bags 10 minutes prior to your climb time. You only get 15 minutes at the top, so make the most of it. It's 7 stories high, and yes, you can really feel it leaning! There are a few shops and restaurants close by, but not much else in the area. Tip for getting good pictures- get low to the ground and shoot up. This was a very enjoyable experience getting to see one of the most famous landmarks in the world.

"I had the opportunity to visit Pisa as my ship was docking in Livorno for a day. We took a taxi from the port as there were 5 of us and the taxi driver agreed to drive us to Pisa, show us the Leaning tower and the Cathedral and the Main Center of the city and wait for us for an hour and a half and d..."rive us back! He charged us 125 Euros....which was great for us!
It took us 25 minutes and the ride is smooth and green with huge trees all along the famous Tuscan backdrop.
We reached Pisa and immediately went to see the tower! WOW! What an impressive piece of architecture! It actually is tilted! I wonder how it is still standing that way after so many centuries!!
You can now go right up to the top with tickets, it has 294 steps.
The Tower, The Church, the Cathedral all form part of the same compound and this area is really busy. You have a hoard of souvenir shops selling almost everything under the sun! Good prices and good bargain. I picked up quite a few souvenirs from here!
