The "Amedeo Lia" museum is located in the old convent of the minimites of St. Francis from Paola, who settled in the town of la Spezia in about 1620. The collection includes about 1200 works of all kinds, classical, late antique, mediaeval, up to the 18th century. There are paintings, miniatures, bronze, copper, ivory and wooden statues, glassware, tin-glazed pottery and art objects which document the taste and culture of Italian and European art.

"We took a 4 hour catamaran ride from La Spezia harbor to the islands near Porto Venere, then out along the coast towards Cinque Terre (we did not make it all the way to Cinque Terre due to light winds). Martin, the owner and captain, is very flexible and anxious to please his guests. The length of t..."he trip is flexible, and may be up to 8 hours. He provides non-alcoholic drinks and a comfortable catamaran, with plenty of opportunity for sunning and swimming. You may bring your own food. The harbor at La Spezia is an easy 30 minute drive from Manarola, where we were staying. Trips may be booked through Explora, located in Manarola. The only problem we had was in finding Martin in the morning. He waits by the catamaran, which is near the easternmost quay in the harbor. I highly recommend this trip.

"driving out of Carrara on the way to walk to cinque terre by way La Spezia we decided to divert to the beach before braving the traffic of Lerici and going public transport from there to the walk.
Caffe and a morning dip was followed by an early lunch of linguine vongole (with parsley) & fritto ..."misto (in a surprisingly delicate batter) which in turn led to a snooze on the beach. By 2pm cinque terre just seemed like a torture. Too many people. Too many padlocks. Too hot. And so, more time on this beautiful beach. The satisfaction of not following the crowd. So ice creams and lemonades were had. Every beach should have food like this. Or maybe not.
The beauty of doing nothing. Il dolce far niente.
Oh what a perfect day!
