"Staying in Lourmarin in June 2012, we found this site while thumbing through our guidebook. The guidebook gave it a "try hard to see" rating and, when we found it was close to L'Auberge de la Loube, it was a sealed deal. Directions in the guidebook were good but you could easily miss the site withou..."t them.
We parked jsut outside the gate and walked up the gravel road to the fort. As you approach the base of the citadel, you will pass under and through a baume, or cave overhang, reported to be the largest in Provence. Notice the pitons in the ceiling from ambitious climbers. (We missed the stone sarcophagi in the jumble of rocks opposite the baume but realized after looking at websites).
As we approached the bend before the caretaker's house, we came upon a French army squad hard at work restoring a stone wall. We paid our fees to madame caretaker sitting in the doorway of her house, received our leaflet guide and started up the rocky path. The first signage you encounter is: "La ...

"A local resident recommended visiting this site when we stopped for coffee in Bonnieux. We are eternally grateful to him! We were probably particularly lucky as off-season it's empty and you can get a real feel for the atmosphere and the remarkable history of the site. It surprised me that such a..."n interesting, rich site is so little-known. The walk itself is stunningly beautiful, and accessible even with children (don't be put off by the warnings of how dangerous it it - it really isn't). We were impressed with the conservation of the site, and the variety of eras that are represented here. There is something very special about it, as a natural and historical site. We had a picnic on site, in the sun. It was magical. The views are breath-taking. It is definitely worth a visit and I would highly recommend it to families or anyone interested in history and nature. Even if you have to go out of your way to get to it, it's worth it. It makes for a memorable experience indeed.

"A little difficult to find, but totally worth it. Recommended to us by our B&B. It's way up at the top of Luberon with views in every direction. Great description by a reviewer below. We spent a couple hours here, looking at the ruins and enjoying the views. We probably saw 5-6 families also ou..."t enjoying their day. Peaceful, historic, beautiful, interesting. It's not in the best condition, as they are still excavating and rebuilding it, but it's amazing to imagine this place built up here so long ago. Highly recommended.
