Situated 8km from Cork City, this historic castle is most famous for its stone, which has the traditional power of conferring eloquence on all who kiss it. The word Blarney was introduced into the English language by Queen Elizabeth I and is described as pleasant talk, intended to deceive without offedning. The stone is set in the wall below the battlements, and to kiss it one has to lean backwards (grasping an iron railing) from the parapet walk.

"Blarney was not originally on our itinerary but we had an extra day in Killarney (2 hours away) and rented a driver/car to visit this castle and Ross. These castles, particularly Blarney, were the highlights of our Ireland trip. We did kiss the stone and it was one of the scariest things especiall..."y when you get a view of the drop under you and realize you depend on one guy to hold you as you lay on you back and, unbalanced, lean back to kiss the stone – it isn’t easy. There are a lot of old castle stairs and they aren’t easy to maneuver but that was part of the thrill of the castle to me. It was exciting to explore. The grounds and gardens were stunning. There is a Victorian House (Blarney House), the interior destroyed by fire on the grounds. The house is still beautiful to view and they appears to be some renovation going on. As we returned to the castle from the grounds we happened upon a very old tree with a large bell dangling from the top on a piece of wood. It looked as...

"I almost dropped this off the list of things to do on our trip, but I am so glad that I extended the trip a day just to fit this in. Walking through the castle was neat and it was really cool to pucker up to the old stone. The best part is walking around the grounds, and I was fascinated by the pois..."on garden. You could easily spend a couple of hours or a whole day, because there is that much to see here.

"It is a unique attraction that everyone should visit. The gardens are well kept and the walk up to the castle enjoyable. You que up in a line and slowly make your way up a winding stairway to the top of the castle. At the top you make your way forward to the stone, lay on your back, and with assista..."nce grab two iron rod and kiss the stone. Though it didn't help my gift of gab it was well worth the climb.
